Summary

Bloomsbury presents Cinderella Is Dead by Kalynn Bayron, read by Bahni Turpin.

"Wholly original and captivating." – Brigid Kemmerer, New York Times bestselling author of A Curse So Dark and Lonely

Girls team up to overthrow the kingdom in this unique and powerful retelling of Cinderella from a stunning new voice that’s perfect for fans of Dhonielle Clayton and Melissa Albert.

It’s 200 years after Cinderella found her prince, but the fairy tale is over. Teen girls are now required to appear at the Annual Ball, where the men of the kingdom select wives based on a girl’s display of finery. If a suitable match is not found, the girls not chosen are never heard from again.

Sixteen-year-old Sophia would much rather marry Erin, her childhood best friend, than parade in front of suitors. At the ball, Sophia makes the desperate decision to flee, and finds herself hiding in Cinderella’s mausoleum. There, she meets Constance, the last known descendant of Cinderella and her step sisters. Together they vow to bring down the king once and for all—and in the process, they learn that there’s more to Cinderella’s story than they ever knew . . .

This fresh take on a classic story will make listeners question the tales they’ve been told, and root for girls to break down the constructs of the world around them.

Refreshing

Not a common protagonist- Sophia is a black, gay woman who doesn't need anyone to save her. She and others met along the way try to overthrow the king who rules over a sexist misogynistic land. The woman saves herself in this one.

Rather predictable story

Narration is good, but the story is quite predictable and boring. I was looking forward to a fantasy story losely based on Cinderella with a strong female protagonist, but it holds on to the Cinderella story too strictly in my opinion and didn't try to subvert expectations almost at all. The author replaces men with women, white people with black people, straight relationships with gay ones, but doesn't take it further. Those characteristics don't influence the story in any meaningful way.

Amazing Dystopian Tale

Such a good story, this amazing retelling of Cinderella really opens your eyes to what Cinderella’s story would result in. The tale has elements of Feminism and elements of a new perspective.

Gripping feminist retelling of a fairy story

This book tells of the lives of the community in the wake of the story of Cinderella and her Price Charming, which is not quite happily ever after.
The protagonist is a fierce, outspoken, Black, lesbian teenager who, through her personal fight for freedom, ends up takes on the patriarchy.
Some feminist and equality themes included a little bit obviously, but I was compelled to listen to this story every moment I had free.
