Summary
Shortlisted for: Popular Fiction Book of the Year – Specsavers National Book Awards 2012
From the No.1 internationally bestselling author comes the third heart-stopping adventure exploring the incredible history, legends and hidden secrets of Carcassonne and the Languedoc. Set during World War II in the far south of France, Citadel is a powerful, action-packed mystery that reveals the secrets of the resistance under Nazi occupation. While war blazed in the trenches at the front, back at home a different battle is waged, full of clandestine bravery, treachery and secrets.
And as a cell of Maquis resistance fighters, codenamed Citadel, fight for everything they hold dear, their struggle will reveal an older, darker combat being fought in the shadows. Combining the rugged action of Labyrinth with the haunting mystery of Sepulchre, Citadel is a story of daring and courage, of lives risked for beliefs and of astonishing secrets buried in time.

A historical novel with a touch of fantasy
Kate Mosse definitely has a clear style: the historical, dual timeline with some supernatural elements thrown in. In this case, the fantasy aspect is played down a lot compared to some of her other works, and only really comes to the fore towards the end. I very much enjoyed her first book, 'Labyrinth', but was a bit disappointed by 'Sepulcre'. I think this one is back up to the standards of the first one. Her historical knowledge is obviously very good, as is her knowledge of France. Definitely one to give a go.

Excellent next step in the Saga
Would you listen to Citadel again? Why?
I would certainly listen a 2nd time to this book as there is so much detail that you always catch something new the next time around.
Which character – as performed by Finty Williams – was your favourite?
Sandrines character is my favourite, I love how her voice changes depending on which situation she finds herself, either very childish or sometime much older for her years.

I am working at rather than enjoying this
I have really enjoyed the author's previous works so am giving it a lot of leeway. The narrator makes much of the language of the book but makes no distinction between one character and another until far too late in the book. I am perservering with this book rather than being swept along by it.

Citadel review
I loved the story & characters in an area of France I know well. I did I not like the changes of years so much. The characters were well formed and very believable as well as so brave considering how young they were. Flinty Williams read it so well.

Best of fact and fiction
Very much enjoyed this book over several weeks. Story line and characters easy to remember despite the length. Gives a good idea of what life may of been like during the war years in this area.

I loved it. Complicated but worth the effort. I will think of it when I revisit Carcassonne.

Romantic adventure
Wonderful story, full of exciting drama with romance too. A great story of french resistance and the terrible cost of German occupation to ordinary people set against a backdrop of the myths and legends of the Langeudoc region of southern France .

Wonderfully crafted spirit of time and of place
We have used all of the trilogy as in-car entertainment as we drive from our home in central France to,and throughout our holidays in the Midi, based in Carcassonne. All 3 are marvellous works of well researched fiction, but Citadel is the best of the bunch. I think it is perhaps Finty Williams' superior narration which tips the balance in Citadel's favour.
Kate Mosse strikes an excellent counterpoint between her description of the bucolic, tranquil atmosphere of the rural scenes and the grim and disturbing scenes of violence.
Whilst the spiritual dimension is less convincing than in the other 2 books, I found the plot and characterisation more so. So much so, Citadel can be read simply as a very satisfying drama / adventure story. However, the last couple of chapters and the Epilogue still have me in tears, even after several listens! Fabulous story telling alround.

Breathless and in tears
Would you listen to Citadel again? Why?
I am sure that I missed many of the subtleties in this story because I was so absorbed in the narrative.
What did you like best about this story?
Ms Mosse's modus operandi of stories ancient and modern running in parallel and intertwining as both reach their climax, wrings you out and leaves you desperate to learn more of both histories.
The counterpunch of ancient and wartime Vichy France was drawn to perfection.
What about Finty Williams’s performance did you like?
It was so good, I didn't realise someone was reading it!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listened to this as I drove from Oxford to Florence and back. To say that it kept me awake is something of an understatement.
