About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Discover the powerful and unforgettable story of female resistance from the New York Times bestselling author, inspired by real events.

A train bound for Auschwitz. One route to freedom...

1942.

After her fiancé is killed in a pogrom, Hannah Martel narrowly escapes Nazi Germany and takes temporary refuge with her cousin, Lily, in Brussels.

Safe for now, but desperate to flee Europe for good, Hannah joins the Sapphire Line: a secret resistance network led by a mysterious woman named Micheline and her enigmatic brother, Mateo.

Freedom is tantalisingly close. But when Lily's family are arrested and slated for deportation to Auschwitz, Hannah finds herself torn between her loyalties and her own determination to escape.

How much is Hannah willing to sacrifice to save the people she loves?

Terrible Narration! ZERO star review!

Why do so many narrators spoil a good book with ridiculous accents? The dreadful German/Belgian/Dutch accents from this narrator really spoiled the book. Why read the prose in a normal American/English accent, but put on such awful accents for each character? There were also glaringly obvious inaccuracies in the narrative. Motorways in 1940s Belgium and an ordinary household having a refrigerator, are only two examples! So unlikely! Additionally, the constant reference to Allied airmen as "soldiers" is so unprofessional and lacking in basic knowledge. So many discrepancies in the narrative - in one chapter a main character wishes desperately that she had a gun. Several chapters later, she refuses the offer of a gun, because she doesn't believe in guns! How are we meant to believe an entire Resistance cell functioned without a single weapon? And the leader of the Resistance refuses to kill! Later the author refers to Southampton dock in London! The inaccuracies, discrepancies and sheer fantasy would be hilarious if I hadn't paid £8 for this trash! Very disappointed with this garbage!
