Summary
"If you are or were in a relationship then not only is this book for you, it's about you!"
Written like a novel, Coming up for Air features a collection of true, interconnecting stories, performed by an international cast, complimented by witty, bold and enlightening narrative from an empathetic writer who has clearly not only mastered, but also experienced his subject matter.
Gay or straight, man (yes even you) or woman, we all experience relationships, regardless of whether or not we like to talk about them. Family members, work colleagues, friends and lovers, some relationships are platonic, some intimate, some good, some bad and others downright ugly, but all relevant because it's these experiences that shape us.
Coming up for Air is the culmination of my lifelong fascination with why, as humans, we can be so loving, yet hurtful to one another. And you won't be surprised to learn that I started compiling this collection of sensational true stories from the USA and the UK, shortly after the spectacular demise of my own relationship.
The result is a selection of heart-warming, dramatic and terrifying true stories about friendship, love, marriage, sex, obsession, narcissism and betrayal that you'll have to hear to believe.
So, come take a front row seat, but be warned, this is not a journey for the faint-hearted. It's a rollercoaster ride through some of the most remarkable, jaw-dropping relationship stories you'll ever hear with some of the most captivating characters you'll ever meet. You'll experience the highs of love, the lows of heartbreak and the stomach churning terror of fighting for your life.
In order to bring these stories to you exactly how they occurred, some chapters contain profanity and scenes of a violent nature.

A New View
Would you listen to Coming up for Air again? Why?
For me, I WOULD listen to Coming Up For Air again maybe a few years down the line, as a sort of reevaluation process.
The version of myself who listened to this book not so long ago has yet to experience a lot of the topics covered, and is listening from a view point of experiencing other people's experiences, rather than identifying with certain scenarios. Which is fascinating since, in my opinion, learning about other people is one of the most enriching things you can do!
To listen to it a second time in the future would be to allow myself another interesting and engaging process, to reflect "Did I make the same mistakes as some of these people?", "Did I actively avoid a situation BECAUSE of this book?"
This is what I enjoyed most about Coming Up For Air, I'm always looking for ways to learn about experiences beyond my own, it makes me a better and more understanding individual, the audiobook facilitates this wonderfully.
What did you like best about this story?
For me it was the element of "overcoming", I have a strong sense of emotional investment in human life, I worry about people, I care, I fret. And boy, this book definitely made me do A LOT of those things. So to see the people in question overcome personal demons, and other people who acted like demons in their lives, brought a true sense of euphoria and relief. It made for a great emotional test, and a thoroughly engrossing listen!
Have you listened to any of Tony Marturano and full cast ’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I am actually an avid reader/listener of Mr Marturano's works, my favourite title of his being Unspeakable.
This particular title is one that, at first, didn't seem to quite fit into my preferred topic of reading/listening, BUT, wanting to try something new, it definitely didn't disappoint. Which I should have known, given the author's usual high standards. As above, I found it to be actually VERY fitting with my interest in humanities, and therefore it can easily rank highly with the other works from this author.
A particularly commendable element of the audio versions of Mr Marturano's works (Unspeakable, Nimbus and Coming Up For Air) is the choice of narrator and cast, I'm yet to take issue with either group of people, and always find they keep me interested to the highest level. Which is perfect when you've already read these books and what to be drawn in as though you've never heard or read these stories before!
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
"Not your strife and not your life, but it could be."

Enjoyed. Different to what I thought
I bought this audio in a rush, thinking it was a novel. Nevertheless I wasn’t disappointed. It is about relationships and a psychological analysis of them. It has helped me to gain perspective and hopefully not be so judgemental. I really like the author and his style. Only criticism is not to repeat so much the words “perpetual” and “proverbial” as they are highly overused and I’m surprised the editor didn’t pick up on that. But overall I really enjoyed it and made me think about many issues from different perspectives.

I liked the fact I felt I wasn't alone, that there are thousands of other people experiencing rocky and abusive relationships.
But there is life after a bad relationship, and what rings true is that old adage, what doesn't kill you will make you stronger.
Anyone who has, or is in a sticky relationship should read this.
This book has helped me to 'see' myself through other people, hence my rating.
