Critic reviews

"...Hoare, the legendary mercenary commander of Congo fame...does not fit the popular image of the mercenary who will fight for - or against - anyone for money.... In a concise, graphic way, he gives a feeling and flavour to the mercenary soldier that few others ever have...." (Peter Worthington, Editor, Ottawa Sun)

Rare insight into the life of a mercenary soldier

Written and read by author. Very absorbing and interesting. Fascinating individual with very varied life.

Quite Enjoyable

its mostly about the shenanigans mercenaries got up to before the congo turned into a total 5h1t show. Considering the subject matter it is very light. Mike Hoare seems like a decent enough guy considering. He has old timey sensibilities- for example he cared more about the proper etiquette when hunting buffalo with machine gun than he did for the lives of his porters- but the man has stories worth telling.

it wont take too long to get through this. definitely worth a go for the price.

amazing stories

a very good story but read some history about the Congo first so that you are not taken in by the bias of his narrative.

Never judge a book by it's cover (price)

Having spent more years in Africa than elsewhere and currently residing in Lagos, I am always fascinated by Africas evolution. This is a remarkably entertaining and informative listen. Not only was Colonel Hoare an accomplished military commander this book and his other self authored books demonstrate he could have had a successful career as a writer and/or voice actor.
I'm surprised the final story alone, the recovery of the female missionary Doctor, hasn't been noticed by the movie industry.
I have also read the excellent Sechelles Affair and plan to proceed to Congo Mercenaries which I recently downloaded.
