Summary

Tom Phillips (Humans; Truth) and Jonn Elledge (The Compendium of Not Quite Everything) team up to debunk the greatest conspiracy theories humans have ever espoused—to teach us how not to fall for them.

From the Satanic Panic to the anti-vaxx movement, it's always been human nature to believe we're being lied to by the powers that be (and sometimes, to be fair, we absolutely are).

But while it can be fun to indulge in a bit of Deep State banter on the family Whatsapp group, recent times have shown us that some of these theories have taken on a life of their own—and in our dogged quest for the truth, it appears we might actually be doing it some damage.

In Conspiracy, Tom Phillips and Jonn Elledge take us on a fascinating, insightful and often hilarious journey through conspiracy theories old and new, to try and answer an important question: how can we learn to log off the QAnon message boards, and start trusting hard evidence again?

Take with a pinch of salt.

I skimmed other reviews and someone had used the word ‘dry’ which is a perfect word to describe the delivery. It suits the subject matter and is not unpleasant to listen to.
Some of the older stuff is really interesting but they tow the line and misrepresent new material. On medical matters they don’t research, others have proven a book’s worth of connections and collusions. They filled one lazy chapter. Politically they tackle Trump (who I don’t like anyway) but on the opposite side of the aisle… never been no theories surrounding Biden, no sir. Was hoping fof better or a bit of fun, kind of missed the mark with both. 3 stars was generous but 2 would be unfair.

Overall an interesting background to conspiracy theories

Interesting book on the background and history of a lot of todays popular conspiracy theories. I would have liked more on the QAnon / Trump era however it’s packing a lot in. The narration was inaudible at times for me with the second reader (I couldn’t always make out his sentences).

God only knows

I particularly enjoyed the history of the Illuminati in this book, there were other tantalising stories, but I thought it was padded out with some stuff that would have been better unsaid.
I was hoping for a bit more of a clarification on some of the recent conspiracies of the Trump era, but it wasn’t to be.

Great analysis

A nice exploration of the nonsense that consumes the minds of many. A great little nod to Karl Popper and the refutation of pseudoscience in the last chapter. There are many conspiracy theories still out there that these tools can be used against.

Excellent

Really enjoyable look at the history of conspiracy theory. Probably a book everyone should listen to, but those that really need to won't.
Highly recommended.

Very fair and even-handed, relentlessly rational

Good treatment of an overdone theme. Relentlessly rational and funny. Well read by the authors.

Outstanding

This is probably in my top 3 books of all time, of any genre. Enlightening, detailed, engaging, fun, thoughtful. Whether you are interested in conspiracy theories or not, this book is worth reading and/or listening, too. The authors read extremely well, the only reason they do not get 5 stars for their performance, is because they are being compared with Nish Kumar, who reads Tom Phillips' other book, 'Humans', which may be an unfair comparison, as Nish is a professional performer, but there you go. A highly recommended book.

Nicely done.

Nicely done, but a bit dry.... Not too dry, you understand, but needs your full attention.
