Critic reviews

Witty, wily, and astonishingly sharp.

-- Lisa McInerney, author of "The Glorious Heresies"

An exhilaratingly weird and funny Japanese novel. Unsettling and totally unpredictable.

-- Sally Rooney

A haunting, dark, and often hilarious take on society's expectations of the single woman.

-- Elif Batuman, author of "The Idiot"

[A] short, deadpan gem... This is a true original.

-- Stephanie Cross, Daily Mail

A sure-fire hit of the summer... quirky [and] profound.

-- Irish Times

shame it was so short. would have like the story to unfold more. does highlight the restrictive culture of Japan.

could have been more to it

I did really like the book, it's well performed and a quite sad but funny story. Vibes of "Flowers for Algernon". It is a tough sell at one credit for a book that's just over 3 hours long though but it's a must if you are interested in Japanese culture.

Very short but fascinating read

Great short listen! Wanted more when it was over. Will keep an eye out for other books from the author.

Great short listen

Its a short quick listen which helps.
It got quite repetitive and I'm not sure if the translation to English was the cause of this.
All in all a good book that questions, what is normal?
I needed more for Keiko but maybe the notion of more is merely a societal way of conforming.

Worth a listen...

for all outsiders. a true Testament of faith in oneself and the right to have nobody else force their 'normal' on another person. deeply insightful, beautifully written, moving and hilarious

just perfect

I really enjoyed this audio book. the narration was brilliant and the plot was brilliant. I will definitely be reading more of Sakaya Murata's books.

The purpose of this book is the characterisation which is just a clear driving force. The plot and pacing are secondary to getting a rich experience of the inner life of the narrator. This is a unique and highly specific insight into the mind of someone with a very different inner life than the typical protagonists and those around her, highlighting some fundamental truths buried in our collective expectations about gender, communication and work.

Engaging, refreshing character driven story

I thought the voice actress did a terrific job here with conveying different voices and tones. The story felt just the right kind of length any longer and it would have felt drawn out

Praise to the voice actress!

Started out great but got repetitive and a little boring towards the end. Had some elements of good political commentary and societal expectations about love and careers but they became overplayed by the end.

Good
