The third stunning thriller in the Kate Brannigan series, from best-selling author Val McDermid.

Manchester-based private eye Kate Brannigan thought it would be safe to let her boyfriend help out with her investigation. But now he’s behind bars and she’s been left caring for his eight-year-old son.

Soon Kate finds herself drawn into the world of drug traffickers, child pornographers and violent gangland enforcers – bringing her face to face with death in the most terrifying investigation of her career.

Critic reviews

"Tough, funny and intensely topical. McDermid stands out as one of the few contemporary writers actually nourished by the here and now." (Literary Review)

"The Queen of Crime is still at the top of her game." (Independent)

This is the second Kate Brannigan book I’ve listened to this month and I really like her as a character. Even though it was written a while ago, it’s still relevant. Good plot and well-paced. The narrator is brilliant, suits the character perfectly.

Really good plot and narration

Great period storyline realistic in detail and convincingly narrated. Very enjoyable listening and good entertainment

Well narrated presentation of an authentic tale

I did enjoy Chloe Massey’s narration but as this is a first-person read, I am a bit mystified why it is all Mancunian when it says that Kate Brannigan grew up in Oxford. Maybe I am being picky but I can’t help thinking whoever chose the narrator hadn’t read enough of the book and just focussed on the Manchester setting. Having said that, I am glad the mistake was made.

Narration

Am interesting and well thought out plot with a well developed sub plot. The characters were believable, although at times the constant banter and hard woman persona was a b little irritating. The narrator was excellent, especially at accents.

Interesting

After the first book I am now more used to Chloe Massey’s narration. The distinction between the different voices/characters was easier to follow :-)
I really enjoy the humour, metaphors and similes used by Kate Brannigan..
Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Lots better...

I once again enjoyed the book, I enjoy both the story line and the growth of the characters that is o going from boom to boom My one concern is that the reality of the "of the escape from tight corners" does not become unrealistic, which at times it did in this story. well narrated and a pleasure to listen too.

At times it pushes reality...
