Critic reviews

"Tough, funny and intensely topical. McDermid stands out as one of the few contemporary writers actually nourished by the here and now." (Literary Review)

"The Queen of Crime is still at the top of her game." (Independent)

Really good plot and narration

This is the second Kate Brannigan book I’ve listened to this month and I really like her as a character. Even though it was written a while ago, it’s still relevant. Good plot and well-paced. The narrator is brilliant, suits the character perfectly.

Narration

I did enjoy Chloe Massey’s narration but as this is a first-person read, I am a bit mystified why it is all Mancunian when it says that Kate Brannigan grew up in Oxford. Maybe I am being picky but I can’t help thinking whoever chose the narrator hadn’t read enough of the book and just focussed on the Manchester setting. Having said that, I am glad the mistake was made.

Interesting

Am interesting and well thought out plot with a well developed sub plot. The characters were believable, although at times the constant banter and hard woman persona was a b little irritating. The narrator was excellent, especially at accents.

another cracking adventure - pun intended

brilliant narrator, who brings the main character realistically to life with her practicality and to the forefront, great relationships development gripping story just shame she can't stick to the white-collar crime.

I love her ever-increasing circle of friends and the personal life if element that comes in but towards the end and there was what I consider annoying increase in tension one of the nice things about the first book is that she behave properly for the most part in regards to procedure and her safety the increasing reliance on breaking and entering etc makes it pretty similar to other Private Eye detective novels out there I actually like the fresh take and the complexities of white-collar crime and fraud and I wish there has been an increased element and then for this going forward you don't need petrol to make it interesting
That being said I did genuinely enjoy every minute

Good book

I have not come across a Val McDermid book I have not liked, and this one was another interesting murder mystery with a few hidden twists and turns. Worth a listen.
