About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Crashed by Adam Tooze, read by Simon Vance, with an introduction read by the author.

In September 2008 the Great Financial Crisis, triggered by the collapse of Lehman brothers, shook the world. A decade later its spectre still haunts us. As the appalling scope and scale of the crash was revealed, the financial institutions that had symbolised the West's triumph since the end of the Cold War, seemed - through greed, malice and incompetence - to be about to bring the entire system to its knees.

Crashed is a brilliantly original and assured analysis of what happened and how we were rescued from something even worse - but at a price which continues to undermine democracy across Europe and the United States. Gnawing away at our institutions are the many billions of dollars which were conjured up to prevent complete collapse. Over and over again, the end of the crisis has been announced, but it continues to hound us - whether in Greece or Ukraine, whether through Brexit or Trump. Adam Tooze follows the trail like no previous writer and has written a book compelling as history, as economic analysis and as political horror story.

Tooze does a jaw dropping job of sewing together the last decade of financial and political instability and change.

Fascinating

Essential reading to understand the world as it is today. Whether you've got a background in economics or not, this book is a very approachable and understandable way of digesting the political and economic forces and events leading to the 2008 financial crash and beyond and that continue to shape the world today.

I don’t know how Tooze wrote this. So much information and interlinked events. I would have liked it to be read by him but the narration is perfectly fine.

So much information

The detailed, but readable book, equally suitable for scholars and casual readership, truly masterpiece. Simon Vance superbly narrates the audiobook.

I'm not qualified, but my humble opinion is that more emphasis on the true origins of the growth of the financial sector’s balance sheets, the global savings glut, would be welcomed. I would, therefore, recommend ’The Shifts and the Shocks’ by Martin Wolf as an accompanying book (hardcover, paperback or MP3 CD – audiobook). Read this two books, and you will know (almost) everything about topics.

'Crashed' is a must-read or listen. I have combined a fantastic combo of the hardcover book and audiobook because I still learn the English language. Match made in the heavens.

Masterpiece

Really enjoyed this. After reading Obama's book with sections dedicated to the financial crash, I was interested to read more about it. I have no financial background but found it engaging and easy to understand. Would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone interested in learning more about the financial crisis, and the wider repercussions of it.

Informative and Entertaining Read
