About this listen
Read by the author, Michelle Zauner, lead vocalist of Japanese Breakfast.
'A story that is both beautiful and heartbreaking; it is as raw as it is precious. I bawled my eyes out, but I also loved it and I hope you do too.' – Dua Lipa
From the indie rockstar Japanese Breakfast, an unflinching, deeply moving memoir about growing up mixed-race, Korean food, losing her Korean mother, and forging her own identity.
'Incredible . . . It absolutely wrecked me . . . So, so emotional' – Natalie Portman
'Crying In H Mart destroyed me . . . It’s fantastic.' – Olivia Rodrigo
'As good as everyone says it is and, yes, it will have you in tears. An essential read for anybody who has lost a loved one, as well as those who haven't' – Marie Claire
In this story of family and food, grief and joy, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humour and heart, she tells of growing up the only Asian-American kid at her school; of struggling with her mother’s expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother’s tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food. As she grew up, her Koreanness began to feel ever more distant, even as she found the life she wanted to live.
It was her mother’s diagnosis of terminal pancreatic cancer, when Michelle was twenty-five, that forced a reckoning with her identity and brought her to reclaim the gifts of taste, language, and history her mother had given her.
Vivacious and honest, Michelle Zauner’s voice is as alive on the page as it is onstage. Rich with intimate anecdotes, Crying in H Mart is an audiobook to cherish and share.

lovely lovely lovely
wonderful, evocative writing and deeply moving. Hands down one of the best memoirs I've ever read (or in this case listened to) with so much texture and depth to it. Highly recommend.

Beautifully written and read
A heartbreaking story told beautifully; both intensely personal and touchingly familiar in how it portrays family, coming of age and grief

Seoul searching
The author pens a love letter to her Korean born mother as she searches for her own identity following her mother’s passing. The narration is both beautiful and heartbreaking. There are moments of comedy and I loved the inclusion of recipes and Korean dishes as a way for us and the author to connect with her Korean heritage.

Great but difficult read
Good story and insight into Korean culture. But a difficult read for anyone who has lost their family or not seen them due to the pandemic. I struggled with this one a bit.

Heart warming and sad
such a beautiful memoir, I just lost my mother 6 months ago so it was a hard read but it also reminded me that things will slowly start to fit in place.

touching in places I would never expect
Mesmerising story that I could finish in one sitting. It perfectly demonstrated how food and family are in the centre of korean culture. Beautiful memoir of Michelle's mother.

Heartbreaking and delicious at the same time
Michelle Zauer’s memoir is majestic. It breaks your heart and it makes you drool over the food she describes, all at the same time.
Her voice is so perfect to read it. So intimate. So personal.

Don't be fooled, This is a five star read.
This is a five star read. I tend to hold back on giving 5 stars as if I can only have so many, but I am unabashedly taken with this beautiful memoir.
Impeccable writing, Zauner slowly and wonderfully explores grief, personal growth, love, shame, guilt, and regrets. Michelle's mother nurtured her in small innately distinguished ways, one of them being food. I loved how she writes about food and her Korean heritage that she explored through food.
I also love how honest the book was about the space that grows between a parent and their child during the teenage years.

Absolutely phenomenal
This was absolutely phenomenal. For anyone who loves to learn about someone’s authentic life experience and it’s intricate beauty, and can appreciate the nuances of life and culture, this book is for you. I read it to better understand a loved one’s experience of parental loss, which I did, and I was surprised to additionally gain in-depth insight into life as an American with a mixed heritage. It’s also a book for you adore food.
