Summary

In the war-torn land of Mangrove, where people are cursed with extraordinary ability’s, three forces battle for supremacy. Pirates to the East, Rebels to the South, and the Strongholds united divisions at the centre of it all.

The wheels of wartime are set in motion when the mysterious circumstances surrounding the murder of a high-ranking Lord are investigated, revealing betrayal and deceit on all sides.

Those of us with cursed power must fight to decide the fate of this world, and for me, that meant becoming a Lord and making a stand.

Darkness rises in the South, lurking across the continent, and behind it, stands the shadowy figure of a demon....

An exciting World of Swashbuckling and Romance

So pleased that I was recommended this. I haven’t been so absorbed in another World since I got embedded in Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time. What a great place to start the year, though I did find it all a bit too exciting to start with and had to limit myself to only a chapter or three at a time. I found the whole experience really romantic in an old fashioned Tolkein sort of a way and without misogyny, which is surprisingly delightful. I had forgotten how refreshing it is to live (in my head at least) with impending disasters that appear one after another without remorse and need to be dealt with calmly and thoroughly. Lots of complex flawed characters and this book sets the scene for any amount of experimental psychology and politics in the way only sci fi can do. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.
