About this listen

Penguin Presents the audio edition of Daemon Voices, written and read by Philip Pullman with an introduction by Simon Mason.

In over 30 essays, written over 20 years and recorded by the author himself in his home city of Oxford, one of the world's great story-tellers meditates on the art of story-telling. Warm, engaging and often amusing collection of writing which offers thoughts on a wide variety of topics, including the origin and composition of Philip's own stories, the craft of writing and the story-tellers who have meant the most to Philip. The art of story-telling is everywhere present in the essays themselves, in the instantly engaging tone, the vivid imagery and striking phrases, the resonant anecdotes, the humour and learnedness. Together, they are greater than the sum of their parts: a single, sustained engagement with story and story-telling.

Beautifully put rational observations. The essays and talks all balance between dreams and "reality", a celebration of a sensuous life on earth

This was an absolute delight

I agree with other reviewers. last two hours all about religion and faith/lack of it....the author doth protest too much.

great insight on what makes for wonderful storytelling and writing

I'm so happy I listened instead of read this book. Phillip Pullman exudes warmth and knowledge and has inspired me to try William Blake with a fresh pair of eyes. Advice is from the heart and thought provoking.

A must-listen for anyone who wants to write a book

There are a ton of essays in this huge collection, with a lot of gold to be found.

Pullman has a lot to say about storytelling, with fascinating insights for readers and budding writers alike.

Great collection of essays on writing

The first half of this audiobook is fantastic, he offers a lot of good advice regarding what makes, and how to compose, a good story. The second half takes a nose-dive in quality; it is a very drawn-out and repetitive criticism of religion.

First half is fantastic, second half too religious

This book is a great insight into how Philip Pullman imagines and writes his stories. Perfect for literary students of all ages. He gives an insight into how his ideas come to life, how they manage to appear on the page as they should and how accidents in writing makes good stories. A natural born writer and thinker, Philip Pullman gives an honest opinion on his works and methods of writing a good story. Of course, none of us think quite the same and being able to pull off similar masterpieces as he does would be fortunate indeed. Enjoyable.

Great insight into a great story teller

Wise Words

The cover of the book explains exactly what this is. It's a collection of essays. The majority are quite interesting and well read by the author. And they have been collated well into a logical order. Beyond storytelling, the author goes into other subjects such as morality and religion. Many of the essays are very similar but you can skip through whichever are not of interest to you. The author clearly has set opinions which can be presented in a very matter-of-fact or arrogant manner. I found this a little annoying but the author is clearly a very successful person so maybe can justify the arrogance. I'm a big fan of Philip Pullman and, on the whole, I enjoyed this audiobook.

Enjoyable if you're interested in the subject

Pullman is wise, interesting, captivating. And these essays were surprisingly interesting to listen to. I'd recommend them to anyone who likes the author or the subject (literature and writing).
