Summary

Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever.

Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

Someone build that time machine already

The depth and the sweeping beauty of the old west and the people who dwelt there for centuries, before America was changed by 'progress' touched a cord within me. Their worldview was without a doubt profound! The panorama, the drama, the truth of our eternal existence, jumps right at you and you have nowhere to hide. All you can do is just reminisce about a time, that you wish you could get back to. The innocence the natives had and profound trust in providence, hit me like 16 wheeler. I wish that world never ended, that's the tragic part. Highly recommend. Breathtaking!!!

You know how it ultimately ends.

Such an uplifting story, well written & narrated but you know it's not going to end well for the Native Americans .

Awesome

I've seen the film of course, but wanted to hear the original script. So wonderful and descriptive. Looking forward now to the second book.

Like book like movie.

Apart from some minor details, this great story is the same either way. Fantastic.

An amazing story!

I've always been fascinated by native american culture and the wild frontier but this book is brilliant and enjoyed is so much. The Kevin Costner film in comparison is pretty good at sticking to the storyline to be fair but you can't beat a book. Was a pleasure to listen to!
