"Das Boot" ist die Saga einer Odyssee auf Befehl: ein Dokument des Augenzeugen Buchheim, der 1941 an Bord von U96 in den Nordatlantik hinausfuhr, Torpedierung und Zerstörer-Verfolgungen erlebte, vor Gibraltar fast umkam und dann mit dem Boot nach La Rochelle zurückfand. "Das Boot" ist aber auch ein wuchtiges Abenteuer und zugleich eine bedeutende literarische Leistung.
