About this listen

The endearing story of David Copperfield’s endeavor to become the hero of his own life, with its intriguing correspondence to the author’s own life, has delighted readers for generations. Dickens himself called this book his “favourite child,” and it is his most quoted novel.

Now you can have the pleasure of hearing Patrick Tull’s brilliant narration of Dickens beloved classic. Listen as David recounts the experiences of his rise to successful novelist - his wretched boyhood , the drudgery of his various jobs, his marriage to the boss’ pretty daughter, his flight to the continent, and finally, a reunion with his true love. Tull’s marvelously resonant voice ushers us smoothly through young David’s trials. His ability to move deftly between different accents gives new life to some of the best-known characters in all of literature. Dora, Uriah Heep, and Mr. Micawber. Close your eyes and soon you’ll find yourself sitting in a little Victorian parlor listening as David tells his story.

Editor reviews

"Like many fond parents," Charles Dickens wrote, "I have in my heart of hearts a favourite child. And his name is David Copperfield." Copperfield is Dickens' most autobiographical creation and the novel that bears his name has influenced generations of storytellers. Narrator Patrick Tull gives a lively reading of this massive, rollicking bildungsroman, bringing to life such characters as the avuncular and hapless Mr. Micawber, the unctuous Uriah Heep, and of course, the eponymous David Copperfield himself. Those ambitious listeners who can't help but burn through all 38 hours of classic storytelling remember these characters and adventure for years.

Just brilliant!

This was the first Dicken's Novel I have read (listened to) and it was just excellent. If you are used to modern literature then you may find this long winded, but I found the slower pace and richer writing a refreshing change and really enjoyed it. This is especially true of the characters in the book, each one is developed and has a rich personality. The narrator, Patrick Tull, is superb and really brings the story to life. Full marks from me!
