Cycling has never been so attractive.
On finishing this book I hoiked my bicycle out of the shed where it has languished for the past 7 years. My nephew fettled it and I now intend to get into shape and be able to cycle farther than a half mile. Mr. Enfield's beautiful narrative of his cycling travels in Europe are a great inducement to the middle-aged to get out and about, without resorting to lycra or worrying about speed. Thank for a gentle read told with humour and style

Easy listening and quite amusing
Dawdling by the Danube was a easy listen. It is interesting to hear his exploits that are downloaded for the BBC.
I so enjoyed his travel both on the Danube and in Ireland. It is great to hear a man slightly beyond his 20's who takes travelling by bike as a means of transport as the norm. He tells it as it is good and bad.

Ultimately endearing
I was a little put off by the first chapter to this which made me think that the author's sense of self might be too strong to enjoy it but kept going and once he was on his travels the whole thing was a delight - calm and observant, affectionate for what he saw but not gushing. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it stayed in the mind afterwards.

Rather boring
I have read several books by this author, which I liked and found interesting. This book, however, compares rather unfavourably with other books by this author, because the author digresses a lot. He tells of BBC films he made as a presenter in Bermudas and of holidays in other places on earth. This present journey was also filmed for a BBC travel program. Unfortunately the author spends a lot of time telling us about the film crews which accompanied him on this and other BBC film tours.
Probably less than half of the book is an actual report about the bicycle journey in Bavaria and Poland.
A better title for the book would have been "Musings of an old man" or something similar.
I am myself an old person and do not mind the author's musings as such, but I mind that the content of the book does not match the title.

A Bit of a Con, Really
Afraid I've got to agree with what some previous reviewers have said. There's far too little in this book about the actual cycling trips. Instead, there's far too much 'going off at tangents' which does seem to have been done to pad the book out and bring the overall word count up. I honestly couldn't recommend it to anybody.
