About this listen
An abandoned cotton mill holds horrific secrets
Police partners DI Calladine and DS Ruth Bayliss face one of their toughest challenges yet.
A group of homeless people have set up camp in the grounds of a disused cotton mill belonging to local businessman Damien Chase. But one of the men is not what he seems. He has a secret he will do anything to cover up. And once Calladine and Bayliss investigate, they find the crimes go much further than they could have ever imagined. Will Ruth be able to juggle her personal and professional lives, and can Calladine deal with their new boss, a woman he neither trusts nor likes? Willing to do anything to bring terrible suffering to an end, Calladine make an astonishing move....
If you like Angela Marsons, Rachel Abbott, Mel Sherratt, Ruth Rendell or Mark Billingham, you will be gripped by this exciting new crime fiction writer.
Dead Lost is book four of a new series of detective thrillers featuring DS Ruth Bayliss and DI Tom Calladine. They can be listened to together or as stand-alone novels.
Tom Calladine is a single 51-year-old detective inspector who is devoted to his job. His personal life, however, is not so successful. Having been married and divorced before the age of 21 has set a pattern that he finds difficult to escape.
Ruth Bayliss is in her mid-30s, plain-speaking but loyal. Her personal life is about to change forever.
The series is set in the fictional village of Leesdon on the outskirts of an industrial northern English city. There is little work and a lot of crime. The bane of Calladine’s life is the Hobfield housing estate, breeding ground to all that is wrong with the area that he calls home.

Another great installment in this fab series
Another great read in this fab series. These books are fairly short but have loads packed into them. I enjoyed this tale which revolves around a homeless camp in the grounds of an old cotton mill. Calladine and Bayliss have to investigate the disappearance of young girls, and also attacks on some of the homeless people.
Calladine is once again having personal problems with his girlfriend and his new family. Bayliss is heavily pregnant and about to go on maternity leave. I love these characters who are portrayed very realistically.
The narration is by the superb Jonathan Keeble who never fails to deliver.

Just as good as ever
I enjoyed this book and Jonathan Keebles interpretation although I do sometimes dislike Calladines voice

*A Gritty Case*
In this instalment DI Tom Callandine and DS Ruth Bayliss have their work cut out. There is a group of homeless people who have set up camp on the land belonging to a local businessman Damien Chase.
The main issue is that he has a secret that he wants covered up, he is keeping women locked up ready to sell them. Like all people like him most of the donkey work is left to others in his group. Sadly for him someone has witnessed something that could upset the apple cart and they are dealt with in the most cruel way. Callandine as usual has a nose for trouble and he will do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of things.
Whilst all this is going on his personal life is still a mess and he gains an unexpected relative or two. His so called cousin is awaiting trial for all his viscous crimes and one by one he is having the witnesses taken out of the equation, one of those on the list is Callandine!!!
How will Tom cope and what about Ruth how will she balance her new life to come. Add to this a new DCI that rubs Tom up the wrong way, there is also a surprise Ally

Proofreader needed for poor grammar, but good storyline
The bad grammar in places is annoying, but the story is pretty good. Some rather old-fashioned ways of characterising people though.

habit forming
I've been hooked by the stories and the characters. The combination of Helen Durrant's fast paced story telling and Jonathan Keebles excellent reading make this series highly addictive. Many thanks.

4th in the series and the best yet
It took a while to warm to the characters, despite the best narrating of Jonathan Keeble who is the absolute master of the task (...check out the DCI Ryan series by L J Ross) but book 3 and this story which is book 4 of the Calladine and Bayliss detective series are huge improvements on the first couple of offerings.
Although the voice adopted for Calladine doesn't quite fit with the authors' profile, you do get drawn in, especially with his emerging, complex family situation and ever-changing love interests, but in this story, when he goes under cover AWOL style into a homeless camp site, you become truly engaged and want nothing more for him to succeed and solve the case.
Overall it is a good story and clearly a series to continue reading, and I note now there are many more (6?) in the series which in future, I would be happy to redeem against my token!

A great police procedural
I am continuing binge listening to this series - great and short but ticks all the boxes. The narration works well and you can really tell the different characters. The crime itself works well.

Jonathan Keeble's voice made for detective novels
Helen Durrant writes well thought out and easy to read crime novels. combine this with the Excellent narration of Jonathan Keeble whose voice was made for narrating the genre and you have annexcllent combination. Sadly Duurant's novels are on the shorter end of the spectrum for audible , but with a kindle unlimited package they are definately worth the £2.99.

A worthy addition to this series.
I have to say I’m glad I persevered with these books as they have developed into an interesting and engaging crime series with characters that have grown on me since the first book. I hope to continue reading the next book in the series.
