About this listen

When you've lost literally everything but your own life, can you learn to be loved or will you give up fighting the negative voice in your head and finally lose yourself completely?

Nora Hart is twenty-four years old, but she's lost everything, rebuilt her life, fought through grief and worse, all while managing to avoid the shifter world that broke her in the first place.

Despite her near death and struggle for survival all on her own, she's done quite well and has created a pretty normal life for herself. Despite all that, fate isn't done messing with her.

Her heart and soul aren't ready to open up to new mates, and may never be, but fate has brought them into her life anyway, causing her to move across the country as she tries to deny her connections and keep some semblance of the life she's created.

Not only that, but that little voice in her head begging for death is back stronger than ever, those from her past who broke her down are back for more, and now she's being hunted by humans out to rid the world of shifters.

Will she be strong enough to get through all of this, to find herself again and have a happy life, or will her struggle finally come to an end?

Death is Easy is the first installment in the Second Chances trilogy. This series is a medium-burn reverse harem romance, and there is a guaranteed HEA at the end of the third book.

A different take on fated mates

I like the fated/rejected mates trope and this was an interesting take on it; I don't think I have ever read a story like this where the mental health aspect has been so heavily focussed on. Although the situation is completely fictional, the depiction of Nora's battle is written about with a lot of care and this is definitely not a case of meeting new mates who suddenly make everything better. This is a gloomy listen with few light moments lifting the tone now and again but we are at rock bottom with Nora at the start of her journey. I'm hoping for some more character development in book two as she spends the majority of the story depressed or giggling and not much in between which although I appreciate that there is no mental health magic fix, I was ready to see more of the other story arcs to balance it out. The seeds of the series plot are being sown and there are a few threads I'm invested in learning more about in book two after that brutal cliffhanger.

It's a long listen and definitely one you need to be in the mood for; the narrators do a solid job with the material with Ash Kingsley doing a lot of heavy lifting as Nora. The MMCs are split between Matt Haynes and Evan Henderson. Atticus was probably my favourite of the MMCs but the narration of Voss put him at a close second.

My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read

Whiny heroine

I was not enjoying this audiobook, I could barely finish, heroin was whining, crying or giggling like an idiot…. I was rolling my eyes so often I am surprised I finished this audiobook, female narration wasn’t great. I would not recommend
