About this listen

There’s a dangerous killer lurking by this loch, and only canny Cressida can track them down.

Scotland, June 1925. Socialite Cressida Fawcett has been invited to cast her interior design eye over the Stirling family’s new seat, Ayrton Castle, up in the Scottish Highlands. Thrilled to be spending the summer at the historic estate, Cressida fills her suitcase with this season’s hunting jackets–and some tartan for her little pug Ruby, of course!

But before the party is ready to tramp through the glens, shocking news puts paid to their plans. Hamish Glenkirk, former owner of Ayrton, has been found dead inside a turret room of the castle. The door was bolted from the inside, and the room is three stories up, surrounded by impenetrable stone walls. How did the murderer get in? And out?

With Detective Andrews of Scotland Yard at least a day’s journey away, Cressida knows she needs to get to the bottom of this case–and fast. There’s no end of suspects among the hunting party. Could it be the local doctor whose wife left him for a fling with the now-dead laird? Or is the gamekeeper hiding secrets under his kilt?

Just as Cressida is closing in on the truth, a blood-curdling scream echoes through the mist. Another member of the party, and one of the suspects, has been shot. With a wee dram in hand, can Cressida find the killer before the bagpipes play for another victim?

A gripping cozy mystery that fans of Agatha Christie, T.E. Kinsey, and Lee Strauss will love.

Narration

The three books have light and very pleasant and overall I have found the narration good but there have been many appalling mispronunciations in each book. Even common place and every day words have been so badly pronounced, too many to recount. I have wondered if perhaps they are American English because there are differences and it is impossible to imagine an “English” English speaker to mispronounce the words involved. The most appalling mispronunciation for me was pronouncing Viscount as “visscount”, absolutely unforgivable! As the books are about English speakers in the early 20th century England to would be reasonable to expect correct pronunciation.
But the stories themselves are enjoyable.

Best in series

I don’t understand the previous review at all which doesn’t seem relevant to this book so might be a mistake.

Compare that review to the ones of the written copy and you will understand.

Very clever and full of twists and turns, probably the best edition in this series. The setting is highly atmospheric and writing very funny.

What's with the swearing?

Didn't finish it. It's not like the first two. There is bad language and the young ladies engage in schoolboy innuendos and uncouth humour. I'm also not a bit interested in knowing who killed the victim as just about everyone hated him. The story is weak and cliched. I love murder mysteries, and enjoyed the first two books in this series, but this one is bad. There are not many books that annoy me so much that I stop reading in disgust, but this one did.

Narrator not good

I had to give up and return this title. One of the reasons I liked the first few books was because of the narrator. Not sure why she was changed. While non Scots might be able to get over the terrible ‘Highland’ accents, it was the overall drawling tone and mispronunciations that made me give up. As another reviewer has said, ViSScount and ‘bad’ her a a goodbye. Eek! Someone should have picked these up.
