About this listen

It wasn't the rain that upset Carole Seddon during her walk on the West Sussex Downs. It wasn't the dilapidated barn in which she was forced to seek shelter. No, what upset her most was the human skeleton she discovered there....

So begins the second investigation for straitlaced Carole and her more laid-back neighbour Jude. This time their enquiries take them away from Fethering to the small download hamlet of Weldsham, where gossips quickly identify the corpse as Tamsin Lutteridge, a young woman who had disappeared from the village months before....

Different to the norm.

I enjoy the way Simon writes, unfortunately his narration is not the best, lots of characters sound the same and you have to concentrate on the story to know which character is speaking. He also ends his books properly. There’s no wondering what happened to certain people and their lives.

Really enjoyable

This is the second book I have read in this series and found it quite different in tone to the first one but just as enjoyable. This book was a little darker and more serious than the first and at times, quite exciting (Fort Pittsburgh!!) but never too worrying.
This was much more a murder mystery than an amusing commentary on society and I was a little surprised at the change in emphasis.
I very much enjoyed Simon Brett as the narrator and look forward to finding number three in the series.

Another good one

They’re funny, these. Each one so far starts off with a description of indescribably (except that they ARE well described!) awful people-the protagonist herself is not hugely attractive - an yet, each time, a compelling, exciting, and well crafted story emerges. So: if you start one, and think, ‘I can’t bear any of these people’, stick with it. Well narrated, too.

An easy and enjoyable read.

How fortunate I was to have discovered Simon Brett. I love how his murder mystery stories don't attempt to win readers by shocking them with blood and gore but simply take them on a delightful journey to the end of the mystery. His characters are so like many people I know, I feel like I could be living in the fictional town of Feathering. Simon Brett is also a wonderful narrator with a clear, eloquent voice that matches his stories perfectly. Although this is only the second book of his I have read, I am already looking forward to the rest of the series.

As ever a comfortable listen with Simon

Love these books…great literary style and languorously easy listening if you want a non-challenging bit of pure English intrigue and murder mystery. Brett has to be my favourite writer for radio - humorous, light and terribly well written scripts that I can listen to over and over. While his novels aren’t *quite* as clever they still delight me and I thoroughly enjoy his delivery as the reader. I read this while I gilded the ceiling of a lovely Scottish castle …and what a perfect way to block out all the building site sounds and immerse myself in the therapeutic process of applying gold. I’ll off and download another alliteratively appellated enigma to finish the job. Thank you Mr Brett
