About this listen

A wizard compelled to kill. A slaughter he vowed to prevent. A murderer who pissed off the wrong guy…

Bib the sorcerer hates how much he loves his job. Cursed by the God of Death to collect lives, he focuses his thirst on snuffing out only lowlife losers and contemptible ass-clowns. But when innocents under his protection are brutally murdered, Bib flips the switch on the ultimate revenge spree.

Bent on obliterating the bum responsible, Bib is more than a little miffed when he discovers the shocking truth about his own degenerate nature. But knowing the type of killer he is inside, the reluctant hero won’t be stopped until he mows down every evil dude in his path.

Can Bib fight his way to redemption before he loses his soul to bloodlust?

Death’s Collector is the first book in the darkly humorous The Death-Cursed Wizard fantasy series. If you like snarky heroes, top-notch magic systems, and epic sword and sorcery, then you’ll love Bill McCurry’s addictive tale.

Fantastical,light-hearted,murderous roller-coaster

Filled with wry humour and colourfully extravagant profanities, it was great fun to follow the various adventures of the murderous and inexplicably, despite his best intentions, likeable Bib.

I'm no fan of murder and gore but it's dealt with in a matter of fact way that perfectly fits the character's personality. Add in some travel, sorcery and many misadventures and it's an engaging tale.

Impossible thought to separate the story from the narration, which was first class and brought all the various characters vividly to life.

Every life is a life of loss.

Bib is a sorcerer. And an healer. And he thoroughly enjoys killing. His task, with Ella, is to rescue the kidnapped Prince in a land rife with war and death by plague. It is a strange and compulsive story with none stop action which really needs to be read to be believed. This reader found it both irritating and compelling, with characters bargaining with God's for powers and what will happen next frequently surprising. A lightweigh, magical mystery tour with dozens of dead bodies strewn along the way. Great fun.

Narration by Daniel Penz is mostly excellent, good pace, great character voices, fine intonation, and the perfect touch of cynicism to hold it all together. However, his inability to sometimes add the last letter to a word became, for this reader, a breath holding experience on a couple of very obvious occasions when he failed to pronounce the final letter 't', leaving the last word of chapter 30, for example, as sho

An interesting book but not one which I would wish to continue into a new series. My thanks to the rights holder of Death's Collector, who, at my request, freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. It is an interesting fantasy story with plenty of personality.

“There are bad deals and there are deals that are... less bad”

Really enjoyable fantasy adventure! Felt like a medieval, magical fantasy with a Texan twang. Well written, full of action and whimsical sarcasm. A great twist on the usual magical source that kept my interest throughout. Definitely not for the feint hearted at times as it gets a little gory!
Daniel narrated this really well, with well defined character voices and great pacing.
Would happily listen to more books from this pairing!
This is my honest opinion of a free review copy.
