Summary

From Roald Dahl, the master of the sting in the tail, a newly collected audiobook of his darkest stories, read by Richard Griffiths, Andrew Scott, Derick Jacobi, Mark Heap, Juliet Stevenson and Stephen Mangan.

'The cruelest lies are often told in silence....'

Why do we lie? Why do we deceive those we love most? What do we fear revealing?

In these 10 tales of deception, master storyteller Roald Dahl explores our tireless efforts to hide the truth about ourselves. Collected together for the first time, stories include 'My Lady Love', 'My Dove', 'Mildenhall Treasure', 'The Parson's Pleasure', 'Henry Sugar', 'The Umbrella Man', 'The Bookseller', 'Vengeance Is Mine Inc.', 'Lamb to the Slaughter', 'Mr Botibol' and 'Man from the South'.

Dahl understood our deepest secrets, desires and fears, and Deception is one of four books - the rest being Lust, Cruelty and Madness - that explore our hidden selves.

Dahl and Delicious Deception

Dahl handles the theme of Deception and it’s various guises well across this collection of his stories. Some stories are more exciting than others, with the all-time classics ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’ and ‘Man from the South’ being the standouts, showing true mastery of the short story form. Some fantastic actors provide narration which really do the material justice.

A classic!

Now I see where Tarantino got his idea for the "Four rooms"! Going to check out other Dahl books.

Chilling and charming

I loved Roald Dahl as a child and wanted to revisit his work as an adult and I'm so glad I found this collection of short stories.
These tales have the same darkness and humour that was so skillfully weaved into his children's stories, but the settings are a little more mature and grounded.
Rounded off with strong, varied narrators and you have some short-but-sour stories to enjoy.

Lots of deception but no disappointment

A great set of short stories that are varied and entertaining, a cornucopia of examples of the meaning of the word that names the book. Some are nasty, others funny, and some are purely historical; of that one I could have read and entire book, but they are all well accomplished and worth the read.

Thoroughly enjoyed

Book of short stories which I thoroughly enjoyed, I remember a few of the stories from a television programme called Tales of the Unexpected.

Roald Dahl At His Best!

On Sunday evenings, my mother let me stay up to watch Tales of the Unexpected, regardless of school the next day. This was about the time our teacher was reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in the afternoons.

Charlie had a much darker side to the story, which was emphasised much more in the Willy Wonka movie that Dahl apparently disliked. His adult stories give a lovely twist of justice, which you can never really see coming. Each of these stories left me with an ironic smirk on my face. This collection also includes one of my favourite Tales of the Unexpected, Lamb to the Slaughter, which hasn't dated!

A broad cast of narrators tops off this masterpiece anthology.
