Summary

When Bampton’s coroner, Hubert Shillside, does not return from a trip to Oxford, Master Hugh de Singleton is called. Concerned for his old friend, Hugh takes to the road to investigate.

Travel is safer than in times hence but, out of sight of prying eyes, it is still unwise to travel alone. Hugh finds a body, stabbed and left to rot, but it is not the body he was expecting to find.

Indeed, reports of pillage, attacks, and chaos on the roads out of Oxford suddenly seem rampant. Hugh must ascertain whether the incidents are random, or whether something darker is afoot.

The guilty cannot afford to be caught, but what lengths will they go to to cover their tracks, and will Hugh escape unscathed?

Great series

I'm doing a review for the whole series as I've left it so long since I started listening to them.

I would highly recommend this series and in fact I have done so to a number of people already. Very impressed with the writing, the research that seems to have been done and the historical accuracy is excellent.

Nice characters, good pace, interesting stories. Really interesting to see the ability of surgeons then and the ways Hugh deducts things.

Beautifully written. Well narated. Well written story

I enjoy books set in the medieval period. This one is well researched, and the writer is knowledgeable on the time period, and subjects within it, as well as specific individuals who lived during this period in history.

Hugh

As always a perfect book wonderfully crafted.
Could do with an explanation of the different foods such as leech limbers being a dish with pork until I looked it up I imagined them eating leeches 🤢.

Another excellent book by Mel Starr

I’ve been absolutely compelled by the Hugh de Singleton series and this book was no disappointment - I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A change of narrator was a surprise and took a little getting used to but by the end I deem Tim Bruce to be an excellent successor - both narrators have been superb!

Easy listening

Went in a bit about Mazlin loaves and roast capons but was pleasant to listen to.

Lovely Historical Story

Once again a very good story line. Love the fact that Hugh is not infallible.

Medieval murder mystery

I would have awarded 5 stars had I not guessed the villains quite early in the story. I love the names of the dishes at meals.
