____________
Demon Copperhead is a once-in-a-generation novel that breaks and mends your heart in the way only the best fiction can.
Demon's story begins with his traumatic birth to a single mother in a single-wide trailer, looking 'like a little blue prizefighter.' For the life ahead of him he would need all of that fighting spirit, along with buckets of charm, a quick wit, and some unexpected talents, legal and otherwise.
In the southern Appalachian Mountains of Virginia, poverty isn't an idea, it's as natural as the grass grows. For a generation growing up in this world, at the heart of the modern opioid crisis, addiction isn't an abstraction, it's neighbours, parents, and friends. 'Family' could mean love, or reluctant foster care. For Demon, born on the wrong side of luck, the affection and safety he craves is as remote as the ocean he dreams of seeing one day. The wonder is in how far he's willing to travel to try and get there.
Suffused with truth, anger and compassion, Demon Copperhead is an epic tale of love, loss and everything in between.
'Legit about to get an 'I'd rather be reading Demon Copperhead' sticker for my Nissan Murano.' ROB DELANEY

Great
David Copperfield is one of my all-time favourite novels. This is a great re-imagining, both beautifully written and superbly narrated. I binge-listened , including listening to a few chapters twice , to make sure I captured every moment. I didn’t want the story to end but when it did, I was smiling.

Brilliant writing. Enjoyed the echoes of David Copperfield as it added to the narrative without being a distraction.

Brilliant and Compelling
Barbara Kingsolver's modern day take on David Copperfield is a brilliant slice of trailer park tragedy that exists across the whole of the USA.
Demon has everything stacked against him. Junkie mum - check. Violent stepdad - check. Family tragedy - check.
Can he rise above it all? Even when the blows just keep on coming? I won't spoil it, but you'll have an amazing time finding out. Best book this year.

Loved it.
As a great fan of David Copperfield wasn’t sure I’d like this interpretation, but was completely engrossed. Yes, relentlessly depressing but so much more. Best thing I’ve listened to in ages.

Brilliant
Traumas you in the boys youth were hard to hear but softened by his own narration and review of them. I was glad to read there was what I felt to be a happy ending which felt needed after the first half of the book. It was brilliant, warm hearted, illuminating and funny.

Astoundingly well written
One of the best books I've read/listened to in years. The voice that Kingsolver achieves with Demon is so beautiful, growing with the protagonist from birth to adulthood. Every character has shades of light and dark, and even though the tale gets grim at times, it's ultimately a story of astounding tragic beauty.

One of the best books I have read.
The story, the issues, the compassion. Perfect novel brilliantly narrated. Right up there with A Fine Balance.
