Kriminalassistent Franz Wilhelm Darkowitsch reist in seine Heimatstadt Breslau um im Fall seiner vor Jahren verstorbenen Schwester zu ermitteln. Als er im Haus des Arztes eintrifft, der damals den Totenschein ausgestellt hat, liegt dieser im Sterben. Unfall oder Mord?

Während Darkowitsch ermittelt, verschwinden in der Stadt zwei Kinder. Am nächsten Tag tauchen die ersten Leichenteile auf- und zwar in Postpäckchen, die der Mörder an die Familie schickt. Ernst Gennat wird um Amtshilfe gebeten und eilt nach Breslau.
