About this listen

English mentalist and illusionist, Derren Brown, talks to us about the release of his latest audiobook, Happy, and how he believes we can attain peace of mind and solidity within ourselves.

Quoting some of the greatest philosophical minds of the past, Derren explains why he has found affinity with the Stoics and their approach in the pursuit of happiness. Also presenting a highly critical view of modern self-help books, Derren argues against the suggestion that we can control the uncontrollable; the universe will not give you what you desire simply because you ask for it.

First introduced to British audiences through a series of programmes entitled, Mind Control, Derren has been demystifying the subtle art of magical and psychological manipulation for 17 years. With his new audiobook, Happy, he agrees that he's moving on to similar but perhaps more intellectual pastures.

Describing Happy as an 'anti-self-help self-help book', Derren Brown wills his listeners to live in the present and think of happiness as a by-product and not an end in itself.

Magic!

Great series of interviews, and this one with Derren Brown is no exception. The thinking persons "David Blaine", he talks candidly about finding meaning in life, in particular in Stoicism - and his opposition to Self Help books like "The Secret", which promote 'think rich, get rich' type pseudo-psychology. I share his interest in Greek ideas on 'Eudaemonia', (the good life) and the varied philosophies of the Stoics, Epicureans, Cynics, Platonists, Aristotelians and all. This combined with his pragmatic knowledge of human psychology promises to make his new book "Happy" a good listen. I find his voice easy to listen to. Interesting interview! I shall get the book.

karma is a batch of cupcakes

I think this takes pressure and feelings of failure off which books such as the secret create. not believing enough, blah blah.
happiness can be simply achieved by allowing yourself a bit more freedom of personal expression. whether that is taking the yes man coat off and saying no! or buying that guitar after wanting to be able to play for 30 years. we are so wrapped up making ends meet, we forget to twiddle our toes in the river.

very insightful

sounds interesting. I'm going to research stoicism but I will take it with a pinch of salt because it just a load of opinions people comprise.
