About this listen
Viscount Derriford likes to keep a low profile. He avoids ton parties and the ladies who frequent them whenever possible, preferring to spend time with his fellow bachelors. A predictable, undemanding existence suits him perfectly. Marriage has never been part of his plans; he is convinced he could never make any woman happy. However, when his aunt dies, leaving him a property in Somerset, this safe, untrammelled existence is threatened by a condition attached to his inheritance. He must accept all invitations proffered by the local gentry.
Miss Mary Coker is a spinster fast approaching her 30th birthday. Having rejected the only offer of marriage ever offered her when she was nineteen, she has long ago given up on the prospect of a home of her own. She is resigned to a life supporting her Mama and siblings. When Lord Derriford arrives in the neighbourhood, she soon notices his awkwardness in dealing with the fairer sex and determines to try and make him more comfortable.
She discovers there is rather more to him than meets the eye.

This is such a lovely book
I enjoyed the novel so much and the audio book narrator’s voices for the characters match what I imagined. Its read well and it’s a lovely gentle story with an interesting plot and engaging characters.

A real heart warmer
This was a lovely follow on from Ormsley the previous book in the confirmed bachelor series but you don’t need to have read the previous book to enjoy this story.
The book, Derriford is beautifully constructed and draws you into the story making you really care about the characters. Jenny Hambly certainly does her homework on the regency period and is a superb storyteller.
Derry and Mary are the main characters in the book and they are just perfect together. Derry has inherited his aunt’s property and is a neighbour to Mary and her family and though Derry is very awkward in conversing with young unmarried ladies, he is drawn to Mary’s kind heart and practical skills and she draws Derry out. He in turn shows that underneath his difficulties that he is an intelligent and brave man and the comfort that they both feel in each other’s company starts to awaken a romance. There is also an underlying mystery that connects both the houses and this adds an extra dimension to the story. The minor characters in the book are well formed, especially Mary’s family the Cokers. The determination of Derry at the end of the book was fun and it left me with a satisfied smile on my face.
As always Helen Taylor’s narration is spot on and the story just comes alive. She is excellent at male and female characters and always gives the right tone of voice for the characters she portrays.
Five stars to author. Five stars to narrator

Very enjoyable
A gentle story about gentle people sounds boring but instead both the story and the people are most engaging.

Excellent on all counts!
i have read this book and quite a few others of Jenny's and hearing it was a new treat. the author has a gift of creating lots of genuinely different characters, some easier to like than others, but she gives them all what they want or need in the end. the main characters are not your normal cookie cutter people they are charmingly original, especially Derriford, who is a shy man who comes to love a quiet, but anything but dull woman. the quirks of the characters are some of the best parts of the story. there are also several other romances and illnesses and intrigue. the narrator has a lovely voice that I could listen to forever, with the best English accent and she is also very good at differentiating the voices, both male and female. I did receive a free copy of this audio book, but I didn't have to post a review.
