Summary

'Diana was the very essence of compassion, of duty, of style, of beauty. All over the world she was a symbol of selfless humanity. All over the world, a standard bearer for the rights of the truly downtrodden, a very British girl who transcended nationality. Someone with a natural nobility who was classless and who proved in the last year that she needed no royal title to continue to generate her particular brand of magic...'

From Charles Spencer's address at his sister Diana's funeral, Westminster Abbey, 6 September 1997

Today, twenty-five years since Diana's death, seems the right moment for a reassessment of this remarkable woman. Did the Royal Family learn lessons from her life, about protection and privacy, about how to incorporate 'outsiders' into their ranks, about how to manage scandal? Did it take any lessons from her death, and the public's reaction not only to that, but to the behaviour of, in particular, the Queen and Prince Charles, in the aftermath? Or have the family and the Palace - 'the men in grey suits', as Diana called them - continued on the same track, unchanged, repeating many of the mistakes made with her, from her first nervous ventures in royal circles to her later defiance of traditional protocols?

These and many other questions are explored in this authoritative book, written by two people closely associated with Diana: Inspector Ken Wharfe was the Princess's police protection officer for six years during the most turbulent period of her marriage to Prince Charles. Ros Coward was chosen as author of the official book by the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Trust. Their book is both an examination of the people and events of the time, and an elegiac tribute to one of the most iconic figures of the late twentieth century.

So heartwarming and believable, professional. Affirms how special and vulnerable Diana was while trying to please the world

Facinating to hear the other side of the story!

I loved this book. It answered a lot of questions I had which came up for me over the years on things that didn’t add in in Paul Burrells book and some of the things the media reported on.

Highly recommended

I’ve previously read Ken Wharf’s book about his life as Diana’s protection officer, but this was an updated version to mark 25 years since her untimely death. It was narrated by himself and his coauthor Ros Coward, and I much preferred the chapters read by Ken, as you got a seance that he really knew her inside and out.
The book revealed facts that I have never heard before such as the background to the Paul Burrel court case. It gives an interesting comparison between how Diana and Meghan where brought in to the royal way of life, and their similar experiences. It looked into how and why Diana tragically found herself in Paris that fateful night, and the legacy she has left.
It was a very interesting read, that I couldn’t put down, and I highly recommend this book above all others about Diana.

Best most truthful book about Diana I've read.

Loved this book. It was honest about Diana including her good and bad points and explains an awful lot about why she had an eating disorder and sadly how badly she was treated by many of the people around her and Charles to protect him and Camilla's ongoing affair. So sad that her dream of him loving her the way she loved him had no chance of coming true. Had she known he loved someone else I guess she'd never have married him. Sad that Royal protocols meant he couldn't have just married Camilla at the beginning. Diana would have never had her heart broken but then we would have never known the beautiful person that Diana was. May she rest in peace. X X X 💜
