The story is far too drawn out - just too much detail... unnecessary over descriptions of minutiae of the protagonists internal monologue, dry and extended readings from what seem to be news articles or case reports, all in an expressionless drone, and OMG those “American accents” 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Slow story, mediocre narrator

I listened to the audio version and I think this may have coloured my feelings about this book. It’s set in America and I found the narrator’s American accents for the many characters jarring. The plot is quite preposterous and requires an enormous degree of suspension of disbelief on the part of the listener. I’ve read other reviews where I think the book was read and not an audio version and -although the comments are not wholeheartedly positive - the readers seemed to get more enjoyment than I did.

I've always loved Sophie Hannah's books and although this is not like her other books in many ways, I really enjoyed it. Hannah has a great use of language and she always comes up with extremely intriguing story lines and in my opinion, this one is no exception. It's very different. I couldn't quite fathom or relate to the lead characters reason for leaving her family (not wanting to give too much away) but, despite this, I found myself completely drawn in and listening to it at any moment I could.

Willow Nash was a great choice- so many audio book narrators drive me nuts but she's got a good variety of accents that were believable.

( I also loved the references to some of the differences in character between the Americans and the British, made me smile)

I have listened to Sophie Hannah's Agatha Christie novels and love those. I didn't like this as much but it is still a great story, well performed by the narrator.
