Before the astonished eyes of his companions Ben and Polly, the Doctor's whole body has apparently been transformed. Now they are confronted by a stranger who claims to be their old friend...but how can they know whether to trust him?
The TARDIS's arrival on the swamp planet of Vulcan brings its own problems; the Doctor is mistaken for an official come to solve the Earth colony's in-fighting, and soon he and his companions are embroiled in political wranglings. However, a far more serious threat lurks within the colony. The scientist Lesterson has discovered a crashed space capsule, within it a group of inert metallic creatures which the Doctor identifies as Daleks.
By the time the Doctor and his friends discover the Daleks' true plan for the colony, it looks as if it might already be too late to stop them.
Anneke Wills, who plays Polly in the story, narrates this debut story for the second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, first broadcast in 1966 and long since missing from the television archives.

Would you listen to Doctor Who again? Why?
Such a shame that there are so many black and white episodes of Doctor Who missing but the recent discovery of 9 missing episodes gives me hope that the others including this gem are out there somewhere. 2nd Doctor Patrick Troughton's debut story taking over from William Hartnell and where his final story The Tenth Planet left off, this sees the newly regenerated Doctor come face to face with old enemies The Daleks on the planet Vulcan. No, not that one from Star Trek which would have been fantastic but instead an Earth colony where The Doctor gets mistaken for an ambassador from Earth and he decides to go along with it to find out what is going on after he finds the real one dead. Patrick Troughton is magnificent as The Doctor trying to convince companions Ben and Polly that he is the real thing and not an imposter and the soundtrack does give you an idea of what is happening on screen with linking narration by Anneke Wilks who played companion Polly. An excellent debut.What was one of the most memorable moments of Doctor Who?

Recently the show tried to recreate some of the magic from Power of the Daleks in Victory of the Daleks but soon lost the subtler (and best) parts of the story in favour of things like spitfires in space and it just goes to show that they're going to struggle to ever beat the original.
The last reason to get this audio book is that you can't watch the original episodes anymore! The narration is more than up to the job of describing the scene though and, besides, imagination creates the best pictures...

Yes - this first Patrick Troughton's Doctor Who story from 1966 is precious as only the soundtrack exists and no video. Ben and Polly are confused that the old man with white hair has changed into a lively black haired man, who insists on playing a recorder.
