About this listen

This CIPA EVVY award winner features a love-able stray dog, soon to be the hero in this adventure with a cast of unique characters. Set in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, a recently retired sheriff seeks tranquility, but finds chaos, romance, and murder.

Ray Pacheco has retired from being the sheriff of Dona Ana County, New Mexico. His new job is fishing. But, not for long. First a stray show dog raises questions concerning the whereabouts of its owner. Then a body was found close to Ray's rural cabin. Maybe once a cop always a cop - Ray joins forces with two unusual partners; an Apache fishing guide, Tyee Chino, prone to drunkenness and a bait shop owner, Big Jack, prone to laziness - to unravel the mysteries. This odd group takes on the task of finding the lost dog owner and solving the mystery of the dead body. To add to the fun, the group becomes involved in the local election of the county sheriff - making friends and enemies as they proceed.

Ray is also challenged by what would appear to be a budding romance - something he was not counting on at his age. This story brings together numerous threads from political corruption, to drug trafficking, to questionable law enforcement activities, to reach a surprising ending.

Terrific book

I absolutely loved this book - great performance by the reader, too. Kind of a Longmire meets Hap and Leonard affair. Just great, I ended up driving about for hours just to finish the book.

"The more you know the better."

Set in 1988, before the prevalence of cell phones abs, as an introductory listing reports, Rain Man, Did Hard and A Fish Called Wanda were playing in the cinemas, and Donald Reagan was President, , Ray Pacheco had retired after serving as sheriff for 20 years and moved to a small, remote cabin outside of the poetically named village of Truth and Consequences to take up fishing. He had never fished before. The store owner, Big Jack, suggested he took lessons from 'the best d*mn fishing guide in the whole d*mn country' to find out if he liked it before spending his money on gear. Which is how Ray came to meet the 6'4" tall Apache Indiam, Tyee China, and together they became friends and, together with Big Jack, looked into the disappearance of an elderly dog breeder, the murder of an older still woman and the appearance of a dog.

Great fun as a story, which moves with a delicious slowness, the well developed characters doing their own thing as well as assissting, or otherwise, the law enforcement off I see in the area. But there is still plenty of action as well as quirky conversation and description of the local environment. A full and founded book, enhanced by the narration of Scott R.Pollack whose voice and timings seem to fit perfectly with the characters he describes. The protagonists are individually voiced, the intonation is excellent as he speaks directly into the readers 's ears. A fine performance.

My thanks to the rights holder of Dog Gone Lies, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. It was a most enjoyable book, and, for someone who likes dogs and somewhat irascible characters, a must.read.
