About this listen

Soar above the skies in this dragon rider epic...

Eighteen-year-old Sebastian Smith never expected to be chosen as a Dragon Rider. Coming from the lowest ranks of Torvald society, his future seemed bleak—until he’s selected to train at the prestigious Dragon Academy. Thrust into a world where he doesn’t belong, Seb finds the connection with his dragon more powerful than he ever imagined.

High-born Agathea Flamma intends to bring honor to her family by following in her brothers’ footsteps and taking her rightful place as a Dragon Rider. Failure means a life of arranged marriage—something Thea refuses to accept. She’s not thrilled with her awkward, non-noble riding partner, Seb, but their dragon has chosen, and now the unlikely duo must learn to work as a team.

When Seb uncovers rumors that an ancient danger is reemerging, he and Thea are drawn into a dangerous mystery. Armed only with their determination and the dragon they both ride together, they may be the only defence against the Darkening that threatens to sweep the land.

Seb and Thea must unite to save their kingdom… or see both their futures shattered.

Expanded and republished in November 2024, Dragon Trials returns with even more danger, magic, and adventure.

Seb & Thea learn to work together even though coming from different backgrounds. A well written story that is good for all ages.

Pass the test or fail!

I enjoyed the book and appreciated that it addressed differences between social classes and the significant tensions between them. As always, the author has an incredible ability to create a story in which events can take unexpected turns.
The reader has a sensitive way of presenting the books.

YA dragon riders confront malign magician

YA dragon riders confront malign magician

Ava Richardson tells us how a mismatched pair of dragon riders are dogged by petty, petulant, prejudiced authority figures and are on the brink of being expelled from the academy - along with their dragon. Seb has to contend with social prejudice as well as mastering skills the others have been developing all their lives. The red dragon has chosen a young lady from a high-born family, close to the king. Expectations and assumptions are exposed and sometimes confounded. Thea has to choose where her loyalty lies. Seb finds a friendly mentor and is guided to other friends who help him develop his own gift.
They are on the brink of graduating, but have to choose between obeying orders or using their initiative to confront the malign magician using a powerful artefact to mess with people's memories and motivatiuons. As this is book one of a series, it's not really a spoiler to tell you they emerge OK.
Tiffany Williams is a good voice actor imparting emotion and meaning as well as clearly distinguishing between male, female and dragon. I particularly enjoyed her laconic, confident dragon heroine rendering.

Good

This is a really enjoyable book to listen to sit back and relax and take an adventure. I love the characters so much. I also wouldn’t mind riding a dragon. Sounds like it’s full of adventure.
