About this listen

Annie Carmichael is excited for the summer. Bonfires, the lake, and peaceful days on the family farm are just what she needs before her hectic senior year begins. Best of all, her family hires a hot new farm hand who seems more than a little interested in her. The calm is shattered when her sister's best friend, Nora, disappears, leaving behind her toddler son. The police are stumped, assuming the young woman simply left Cloverville. Annie's sister knows Nora would never abandoned her child. Annie sets out to discover the truth - one she may not want to really know.

Short but engaging

This is one of the shorter audio books iv listened to but that in now way affected the quality of the story telling or the world building that is packed into it.

Although short (2hrs something) the action is not fast paced, the narrative takes its time, building our trust in the characters, bringing them to life to us rather than leaving them as flat 2d stereotypes. At key points in the story we are given descriptions of clothing and hairstyles, the author doesn't fall into the trap of giving us descriptions of how the girls look but rather focusing on their mannerisms and how they present themselves to show us their personalities and each sister has her own distinct personality.

I really liked the twists and turns in the story, it could have been a typical summer romance type story or not, family breakdown, roles of father's, roles of mothers, expectations of what we thought life would be like to what it is.

The narration was also enjoyable as nothing was overplayed, it had the right tone for portraying the mind of a teenage girl working her way through one of the hardest summers of her life.

I would definitely be up for listening not more in the series and seeing how the girls grow
