About this listen

One mysterious mansion. Two rival journalists. Three weeks to uncover the story—and love—of a lifetime. Don’t miss this unforgettable romantic comedy performed by Phillipa Soo and John Cho!

Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive.

Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal. Intrigued, Wes goes to the source to learn more—only to discover Nadine had the exact same idea…and the infuriating woman isn’t willing to respect dibs. Typical.

At first, Dot refuses to speak to either of the squabbling pair, but then they receive an unusual request—work together, and Dot will share everything. The offer seems too good to be true…and of course, it is: in a bitter twist of irony, Dot dies for real before she can finish recounting her story. Not all is lost, however. The estate’s executor allows Wes and Nadine access to Dot’s sprawling wonderland of a mansion for three weeks to find their answer. That’s three weeks of working together…three weeks of endless sweltering in tight spaces…three weeks of learning there could be something more between them than a desire to win at any cost.

And maybe, just maybe, under the rubble of all those could-have-beens they’ll uncover more than the secret of Dot Voline’s long-ago scandal—and Lady Death will finally embrace what she’s wanted from life all along.

Editorial Review

The perfect balance of bitter and sweet
You know the story: Boy meets girl. Boy and girl hate each other. Then something wonderful happens: Boy and girl start to see the true nature of the other and fall deeply in love. But Drop Dead isn’t your average enemies-to-lovers story. In her latest rom-com, Lily Chu blends the sharp edges of rivalry with the soft sweetness of romance for a uniquely entertaining romp that you won’t want to hit pause on. Sparked by a prematurely published obituary for a not-dead-yet local author, rival Toronto journalists reluctantly team up to uncover a long-buried, high-stakes scandal that challenges both their personal and professional ambitions. Chu’s longtime narrator Phillipa Soo is joined by actor John Cho, making Drop Dead Chu’s first dual-narrated novel, but hopefully not her last. In an interview with Audible Editor Patty K Rivera, Chu shares how her love of obituaries, mysteries, and cats inspired her to take listeners on this rollercoaster ride full of intrigue, humor, and unexpected romance. — Margaret H., Audible Editor

Honestly, I didn’t think that I would enjoy this book and it took a couple of chapters for me to get into, but I did. It had me smiling so hard my face hurt. A simple story with all you could want. Romance, death, love and not forgetting cats and overprotective, manipulating moms! Give it a read/listen. You will be glad you did!

Amazing way of turning the sad into the glad!

I did like this, but I prefer Lilly Chu’s other books. I thought Nadine’s and Wes’s chemistry was kind of random in parts, so I Found it harder to believe. I would have liked to see more of Dott!

Kind of mixed

This gentle mystery was satisfying due to the characterisation and humour of its characters. The character of Wes's mother will be unknown to many, and may seem extreme, but the author nailed it, and the ensuing effect on Wes was bang on. The decency of the two main characters was a relief, and the clever plot twists made for a really pleasurable reed. The narrators are first class.

A beautiful, interesting story

Love this author and the narrators.

You think you know the story and you get a little disappointed but you are wrong. It’s not the point of the story at all.

Great listen/read.

Such a sweet story where you think you know the plot but don’t.

It was a lovely story and very well narrated. I would reccomend it as it is easy to listen.

Great story

Not for me, I personally found the story slightly over-long with certain (unnecessary) bits overly detailed and gone over repeatedly, and other parts of the story not developed enough. I also found one of the main characters (Wes) painfully dense and boring, which definitely impacted my overall enjoyment of the story. Fine as something to have on in the background, but definitely didn’t keep me hooked.

The story would have definitely benefitted from more Dot!!
