About this listen

Working from recently discovered files left by his father, Brian Herbert and best-selling novelist Kevin J. Anderson bring us Dune: House Atreides, the prequel, which captures all the complexity and grand themes of the original work while weaving a new tapestry of great passion and momentous destiny into a saga that expands the tale written by Frank Herbert more than 30 years ago.

It is the year 10,154 of the Imperial Calendar, and for four decades the planet Arrakis - called Dune by its inhabitants - has been ruled by the Harkonnen family. But the seeds of change have been sown. On Arrakis, an idealistic young planetologist, Pardot Kynes, goes out into the desert to learn the secrets of its giant sandworms and the priceless Spice they create. And on another planet, Caledon, young Leto Atreides is nearly ready to become duke. The blood feud between House Atreides and House Harkonnen is about to begin.

Drawing on notes, outlines and correspondence Frank Herbert left behind at his death, House Atreides is a breathtaking story of war, treachery, decadence and steadfastness in the face of overwhelming odds.

Loved the Dune books when I read them many years ago.

I initially struggled with this audible as I’m not a fan of the Narration or the narrator. I’ve really struggle over the years with American narrators. To me it’s flat with no noticeable difference in characters. Best American narrator to date has to be Will Wheaton.

Be careful listening to this book Scott Brick the perfect tone (not unlike white noise) to send you to sleep. So use that timer.

You can see where Frank Herbert was going with the story. Going to take a break from this series.

The epilogue was extremely interesting. It should the passion of Brian and Kevin to do this universe justice.

Great start to a prequel.

Wasn’t sure what to expect from this but can honestly say that as a Dune fan, this was brilliant! It filled in some back stories in really wonderful and inventive ways. I didn’t want it to end.

Fantastic read

I really enjoyed this audio book. Having read the paperback years ago, I wanted to revisit the prequel stories particularly in the wake of the Dune part 1 film. While many of the purists in the Dune fandom dislike many of the entries in the series post Frank Herbert I really enjoy these prequels. Although I agree that they are less cerebral and philosophical than Frank's books they still tell a good story and are arguably more accessible to a new audience unfamiliar with the original Dune novels.

For people unfamiliar with the Dune saga, if you enjoyed the action and political intrigue of Game of Thrones you will like this prequel series.

I loved every second of this book. Not only was it wonderfully written, but it was wonderfully narrated. If you’re a fan of the series, or if you’re just getting into it, you can’t go wrong with this book.

An absolute must!!

A really long story that you had to keep you attention as it went from 1 household to another. The cloak and dagger going on behind the scenes was at times hard to keep up. I did enjoy it but before I started it I made sure I had a lot of time to listen to it.

Brilliant work and a suitable prequel to a sci-fi great. Long awaited and worth it.

A suitable prequel

To hear how it began and explained why so much hatred was between the houses. And how corrupt they all of them were.

Great writing

A fabulous read from start to finish, making my introduction to the Dune universe lip smacking. I'm excited about working my way through all the books, soaking in the rich tapestry hinted at here. I've not enjoyed a book so much since I read The Reality Dysfunction.

A nonstop rollercoaster
