About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

From internationally bestselling author John Boyne, an inescapably gritty story about one young man whose direction in life takes a vastly different turn than what he expected.

It’s the tabloid sensation of the year: two well-known footballers standing in the dock, charged with sexual assault, a series of vile text messages pointing towards their guilt.

As the trial unfolds, Evan Keogh reflects on the events that have led him to this moment. Since leaving his island home, his life has been a lie on many levels. He’s a talented footballer who wanted to be an artist. A gay man in a sport that rejects diversity. A defendant whose knowledge of what took place on that fateful night threatens more than just his freedom or career.

The jury will deliver a verdict but, before they do, Evan must judge for himself whether the man he has become is the man he wanted to be.

Too many emotions to write about, but sadness for a life ruined by unkindness to start, and cruelty … this one will be hard to forget

How extraordinarily well written

Powerful & pacy, a cracking listen. No one tells a good story like John Boyne - I loved how this followed on from Water. Very well done.

Another cracking John Boyne

Despite his failings I did warm to Evan and I loved how the story weaved back and forth.
It was sad that he didn’t get to be what he wanted to be and how that impacted his life. John Boyne is my favourite author and continues to be.

A poignant story

incredible story

I’ve always enjoyed John Boyne’s story telling and this is no exception. The book is an exploration of a vase of alleged rape and we don’t find out until the end, if the allegations are valid. The description of the trial makes clear that justice is often about having a good lawyer, and not about discovering the truth. We discover how words and suggestion can matter more than establishing facts. The reading of the novel was superb. A very calm and deadpan delivery, very suitable to the narrative. I’d like to hear more from Dane Whyte O’Hara.

An Intrigueing Story

John Boyne is an incredible writer and with this short novel he does not disappoint. His prose is clean and the story really keeps you listening for each twist. His main character's journey will keep you hooked and his plotting is as good as any mainstream thriller writer. Vivid, sympathetic and never boring, the people who occupy these pages draw you to them. This is a very highly recommended listen with a good performance to compliment the material.

A TRULY GREAT STORY WELL TOLD
