About this listen

A modern classic for listeners of The Borrowers—about 11-year-old Edie Winter and her magical box of winged people that only children can see.

When 11-year-old Edie Winter finds a mysterious box on the London Underground, she's amazed to discover that it's home to a family of Flits—tiny winged people. But Impy, Speckle and Nid need Edie's help. Not only do they need supplies (rice crispies, sugar sprinkles, digestive biscuits and raisins) and someone to look after them, but their brother Jot has run away and they need Edie's help to find him.

Set against the backdrop of London and its Underground network, Edie and the Box of Flits is a story about friendship, family and noticing the little things in life.

Atmospheric adventure

This story is a perfect balance: fast-paced, suspenseful and full of peril, yet at the same time cosy and comforting. It involves a race of tiny, fairy-like creatures (who get very offended if you call them fairies!); the villain who wants to exploit them; and the girl and boy who want to protect and champion them. It continues the tradition of The Borrowers and Mistress Masham's Repose, but updates it with tube travel, spiked hair, and horrifying instagram posts. The setting on the London Underground (including a disused 'ghost station') and its Lost Property Office is terrifically atmospheric. The characters are full and sympathetic, the plot is well constructed, and the writing is really lovely. Good for boy and girl readers, and also for a range of ages. Answers the need for adventure, but is also safe for the younger set at bed time. Suggests some fun field trips for those near London.
