About this listen

We rely on effective research in many areas of life, and at times our lives even depend on it. But what is it that makes research effective? Any good research rests upon, above all else, method. In these 24 dynamic lectures, you’ll discover the remarkable procedures and techniques that make research such a powerful tool. This brilliantly conceived course gives you a deep, detailed, and practical guide to proper research methods - methods that are broadly applicable to all kinds of research.

As groundwork for your own research project, you’ll investigate ethics in research, the role of reviewing the scholarly literature, how to choose a topic for your research and a research question, how to choose the best research design for your project, and how to measure your data.

You’ll then study the most important categories of research design and methodology, including:

  • The Classic Experiment - Grasp the procedure of the experiment, the hallmark of research in the sciences
  • Surveys - Learn to design and run a survey, and construct survey questions
  • Case Studies - Delve into the workings of the case study and how to choose your cases for a case study project
  • Field Research -Take a deep look at the use of interviews and how to conduct them, and at observation research, which observes the behavior of subjects in the field
  • Applied Research - Investigate action research, which seeks collaborative solutions to real-world problems

In the final section of the course, you’ll learn to analyze your data and communicate your findings. Here, you’ll study quantitative data analysis, interpreting your findings through simple statistical calculations, and qualitative data analysis, which involves discerning meaning and patterns in data. And you’ll learn how to share your findings, from the formal research report to less formal approaches. In Effective Research Methods for Any Project, you’ll gain real skill with this practical and transformative approach to knowledge creation.

very informative

The course is very well presented and gives insights into statistics, research planning and differences between qualitative and quantitative research. It is, however, very focused on the social sciences.

Stats Made simple

Very good performance. Some details in still not sure on, but that’s just because I find stats difficult.

Helpful

In the beginning too enthusiastic, but later got used to it. Helpful, but for my studies I was missing the graphs.

Energetic narration & pragmatic examples

I listen to this book on audible and found it very easy to understand. I used information from it to design a quick research methods quiz for the Institute for Development YouTube channel – see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9LmUotEMqU. People are finding the quiz quite useful.

A must read for all Masters Dissertations

This filled in so many missing links in my understanding of research. The big picture of what it is and how it should be thought of is delivers though interesting stories. It helped me realise how to define the scope of my project and why small can sometimes be better. Though it covers research methods, it did this generally teacher than in depth. It will help you know what to look at in further depth yourself. I actually listened to this on the drive to and from uni and found it to be a better education than the dissertation module from the uni. It even makes it interesting. It is accessible and everything you’ll need to get started in you research project. The most useful thing I did was listen to this and it helped me get a distinction as well as a research grant and with the confidence to pitch an article published in a journal now. Super grateful for this great audio series!

Wow. Just wow. My First Audible

I had some doubts about audible learning, but I have long car journeys to london so instead of listening to the same old radio charts I decided to try and use my journeys productively. I'm a 3rd Year undergraduate just starting a minor in Statistical Research and my Major is social sciences so this hit bang on topic wise hence why I picked it. What I didn't realise is how good Amanda is at reading this to you. One way it might be, it still feels like a conversation - you're given space to think, and grapple somewhat complex concepts without being able to see it on paper. I pay £9000 a year for UNI but this 12 hour Aubile explained so much to me. It really made everything taught in lectures make sense. University statistics seemed like an alien planet, each concept another species that I had no idea why I'd be studying it and what for really - just the fact that I needed to know and use certain parts, but this Aubile sets it out so well, it's a breath of fresh air to my mind and resorted all the confusion topic by topic until now, after a month, I am so much more confident in myself and my future in statistics. It's not only helpful for my degree but all degrees and if you do journalism too. There are a few really key points in here that have stuck with me and I cannot recommend it enough to those who are wondering if they should listen to it. If you're here already, reading this review, do it, that's the best 12 hours I have ever invested in anything. It made me really look forward to my long car journeys and each time I was left really calmed, de-stressed and full of understanding as it made more sense. This isn't something to listen to in one sitting tho unless you're taking notes as it's so much information. What a great start to my Audible journey tho. Thank you Amanda M. Rosen!

Edited to counter some particular reviews: I found the criticism to be very harsh. Several reviewers complained about her voice in a really rude way, I'm surprised Audible allows reviews with comparisions to "retard" voices etc. I'm a little deaf so I use proper headphones and her voice and pace is nothing short of excellent and I'm usually used to subtitles. Either way we're all different to voices etc but it is uncalled for to be rude and disrespectful to someone who's made such an effort to bring this content to Audible.

Excellent introduction to research methods

I found this an excellent introduction to research methods and wish I had taken time to listen to this before starting my dissertation.

The course is structured to give you a really good grounding in the importance of following a standardized approach to research and explaining in simple terms the different methods that can be applied depending on the nature of the research. It also provides a really interesting background to the development of current research methods with lots of simple examples from real life to help you understand why research is undertaken in a particular way.

It is not aimed at making you an expert in a particular method but it does provide an excellent starting point from which to build upon. It is also generalized and can be related to all types of research projects, not just academic studies.

Initially I was a little reluctant to commit to the book as some reviews claim the narration is too fast and 'shrill' however I did not find this at all so don't let them put you off the book if you are starting out on a research project.

Useful content, annoying narration

Good as in introduction to research methods. The narrator’s shrill intonation is grating, however. I would suggest listening to the sample before purchasing.
