About this listen

This fun and inspiring story shows that it is never too late to fulfill a long held dream. For thirty years, Diane Covington-Carter dreamed of living in France and immersing herself in the country and language that spoke to her heart and soul.

At age fifty, she set off to fulfill that yearning. Journey along with her as she discovers missing pieces of her own personal puzzle that could only emerge in French.

Most of all, Covington-Carter learned that a long cherished dream can become even more powerful from the waiting.

This is a delightful Coming of Middle Age memoir. The heroine’s journey of a mid-life American who has always loved French but who, marrying young, has always been too busy bringing up her family and providing for them to have a gap year. Now is the time. After contacting Gilbert, a wartime protegee of her father, she goes to live in a charming provincial town in France for a few months. The “Journey” interweaves the author’s background with beautifully realised scene setting. While she establishes a fulfilling social life and an artistic practice, she re-evaluates her past and deals with visits from friends and family. The story provides salutary advice on the benefits, growth potential and difficulties of venturing out into the unknown from the comfort zone of her own monoglot English culture. She returns to the US grateful and happy with the life that she has. And with better French.
