Un estudiante está en su habitación abatido, reflexionando sobre lo sólo que le ha dejado su amada Leonora que se ha marchado para no volver. El cuervo se posa sobre el busto esculpido de Palas Atenea, pero además el cuervo puede hablar y a las preguntas del joven siempre responde lo mismo "nunca más" El joven, bajo la influencia del nepente, una droga alucinógena, pregunta en repetidas ocasiones a imaginarios querubines que invaden la habitación y al cuervo si volverá a ver a su amada Leonora en lejanos paraísos.
