About this listen
The primary argument that the book makes is that an explanation of how the mind functions or how a person's intelligence develops cannot be provided only by cognition. In order to provide an explanation for the wide range of observed disparities in real intellectual performance among persons, within individuals, and across stages of development, it is necessary to take into consideration the interdependence of cognition, emotion, and motivation.
It encompasses and integrates a wide range of scientific discoveries and advancements, from cognitive and affective neurosciences to cultural psychology, and addresses fundamental issues of individual differences, developmental variability, and cross-cultural differences with regard to intellectual functioning and development. The author views human intelligence as being fundamentally limited by biology and adaptive needs, but modified by social and cultural influences, and the book summarises and integrates these ideas. Additionally, the book proposes a new approach in theory and research on intellectual functioning and growth.
