The illustrations to do with marriage family situations were a bit far away from my own life as a single woman and I think there are increasingly more of us- singleness seems to be reaching the figure off 50% in many places, but since it is not what most people really aspire to, it is still largely missing in how those who produce any kind of content relate to their readers and audiences. That means single people often have to hear content about couples and families but that does not really happen the other way around. It can feel a bit excluding and even more marginalising. Some people are in pain about it and some may have gone through horrific situations that have not ended in finally finding someone.
In this sense, many of those who present content for the church are rather privileged as there are many people who cannot share their experience but they can still place their lifestyles front and centre of discourses. I appreciate that it mentioned in one of the daily devotions, but this was a short reference (however, maybe I missed it elsewhere as I am so relaxed when I listen that sometimes I drift off to sleep). It would be nice if this very common state, that for some is unwanted could be seen and addressed more, seeing as the emphasis coupledom is placing many people in crises of existence and faith, Yes, it is important that we were snarky or demanding with our husband and need to repent and change- definitely but there are also some who don't have a husband and wonder if they ever will, maybe because they are single and childless at 52 or 65 as you see the decades passing.
Having said that, it was seeing that Lysa was an author in the book that brought it to my attention and I respect her as someone who had been through some very tough realities that she has spoken of publicly. Respect and hats off to her.
It is a book that encouraged me greatly and I will be listening again. Thank you.
