When Detective Sime Mackenzie boards a light aircraft at Montreal's St. Hubert airfield, he does so without looking back. For Sime, the 850 mile journey ahead represents an opportunity to escape the bitter blend of loneliness and regret that has come to characterise his life in the city.
Travelling as part of an eight-officer investigation team, Sime's destination lies in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Only two kilometres wide and three long, Entry Island is home to a population of around 130 inhabitants - the wealthiest of which has just been discovered murdered in his home.
The investigation itself appears little more than a formality. The evidence points to a crime of passion, with the victim's wife the vengeful culprit. But for Sime the investigation is turned on its head when he comes face to face with the prime suspect and is convinced that he knows her - even though they have never met.
Haunted by this certainty, his insomnia becomes punctuated by dreams of a distant past on a Scottish island 3,000 miles away. Dreams in which the widow plays a leading role. Sime's conviction becomes an obsession. And in spite of mounting evidence of her guilt, he finds himself convinced of her innocence, leading to a conflict between the professional duty he must fulfil and the personal destiny that awaits him.

A Mystery that spans decades & 2 continents.
I love Peter May's writing, he has such a great way of gliding back & forth seamlessly through the decades whilst still keeping you glued. I especially like hearing the gaelic & the descriptions of the Scottish highlands and highlanders. The primary mystery becomes almost secondary to the mystery of Sime's ancestor & what connection this has (if any) to the murder he is investigating. Peter Forbes narration once again is superb he breathes life into all the characters & his accents & intonations especially with the gaelic are perfect. A thoroughly enjoyable story as always from Peter May & a great audio book. Wholeheartedly recommended.

TOO MANY COINCIDENCES, TOO PREDICTABLE!

Weak and predictable.
What about Peter Forbes’s performance did you like?
He is an excellent narrator of Peter May's Hebridean stories.

There were just too many coincidences to make it believable. I don't think it is Peter May's finest hour. I found his language to be less evocative than in the Lewis Trilogy and, at times, cloying. A lot of people obviously enjoyed it more than I did. I finished it out of loyalty but cannot say that I enjoyed it.
However, it is good that he has enlightened the world as to some of the atrocities that took place during the Highland Clearances

Umm... An interesting concept
I particularly enjoyed the historical, Scottish Highland Clearances chapters of this book. Peter May seems more at home, more fluid with this part of the story, the Canadian sections seem more laboured and improbable.

Gripping and harrowing in parts
It’s not the kind of book you want to read if you just want an unchallenging who-dun-it. Although it’s about a modern day murder investigation on the remote Magdalen islands, Peter May includes a flashback story about the main character’s ancestor and describes the Scottish land clearances and his family’s enforced emigration across the Atlantic to Canada. As usual the author does not waste the opportunity to elaborate on man’s inhumanity to man. In this case how landowners in the past evicted their Scottish tenants and subjected them to starvation, disease and homelessness. A shameful episode in British history. If you like crime thrillers and history it’s a fascinating read. I loved it. I learned from it. Peter Forbes reads it brilliantly as always.

Great
Wasn’t sure I’d enjoy this. Sometimes books get a tsunami of positive reviews and I find that it’s just ok. This book however was fabulous as was the narrator. Really enjoyed it.

Fantastic
I was a little reluctant to listen to this book... because I had loved Peter May's Lewis series so completely and I wasnt sure anything else would be anywhere near as good. Fortunately, one of the Audible Voices I follow, and whose taste and views seem to be similar to mine, gave it a top review so I went for it, and was so glad I did - thanks Kirstine from Bonnyriggs!
The story is intriguing from the start and brings together the history of the Highland clearances and early colonisation of Canada by the evicted Scots and Irish with a murder mystery.
The performance from Peter Forbes is fantastic and his voice weaves stories and images in one's head perfectly.
Like Kirstine before, I can only say - if you loved the Lewis Trilogy, go for it. If you haven't read the former, you have 4 cracking books to enjoy!

Brilliant
A good crafted tale,gripping and intriguing plus the added bonus of being educational. Brilliantly read by Peter Forbes.
