About this listen
In this story of perseverance in the face of adversity, Regina Calcaterra recounts her childhood in foster care and on the streets and how she and her savvy crew of homeless siblings managed to survive years of homelessness, abandonment, and abuse.
Regina Calcaterra's emotionally powerful memoir reveals how she endured a series of foster homes and intermittent homelessness in the shadow of the Hamptons, and how she rose above her past while fighting to keep her brother and three sisters together.
Beautifully written and heartbreakingly honest, Etched in Sand is an unforgettable reminder that regardless of social status, the American dream is still within reach for those who have the desire and the determination to succeed.

...just as engrossing the 2nd listening
...I will never find the answer to the question I have had for many years as I listen to survival stories. As a person who had a much more stable childhood household...though emotionally damaged and later diagnosed neurodiverse...what it is these children, whose stories I listen to, have embedded within that not only allows for a healthy survival but enables them to grab on and succeed to such heighths and understandings with so many missing ingredients and hellish abuses and let-downs by so many....
It blows my mind and brings a bit of shame for not achieving more of what I was capable if and a deep, humble appreciation for what did not happen to me.....life truly is a mysterious thing!
