London, June 2019. Maggie is 30, pregnant and broke. Faced with moving back to the home town she fought to escape, she’s wondering if having a baby with boyfriend Ed will be the last spontaneous act of her life. Ed, meanwhile, is harbouring secret dreams of his own.

Phil hates his office job and is living for the weekend, while falling for his housemate, Keith. But there’s a problem: Keith already has a boyfriend. Then there’s Rosaleen, Phil’s mother, who’s tired of feeling like a side character in her own life. She’s just been diagnosed with cancer and is travelling to London to tell Phil, if she can ever get hold of him.

As Saturday night approaches in a city on the brink of political upheaval, all their lives are set to change forever. It’s the hottest summer on record, and the weekend is about to begin.

Honestly loved it but as someone who grew up on the West-Essex-East-London boarder this book hit a lot of familiar places and vibes. Turbulent romance, heartbreak and queer joy all rolled into one heatwave summer. A love letter to endless promises London offers.

Particularly enjoyed the description of Colors nightclub in Basildon and raves on Hackney marshes.

Addictive tale about young Londoners trying to survive the chaos of the city and the turmoil of their emotional lives

Having invested in the characters felt that the end of the novel ended anti-climatically.

Complex inter-woven characters

A good account of the solipsistic, delusional, self-absorbed thinking of teens and young adults. It’s a good enough story in its way. But the ruinations of the various tortured characters/victims are likely to seem comical to older readers.

Loved this story. It seemed to end quickly, but it left me wanting more. Amazing narration!

More please!

Great narration, the story is compelling, earnest and at times sad but pulls you into a world that feels alive.

Thoughtful and warm..

The author paints some really nice vignettes of Queer life in London in the late Tens. However, I wasn't gripped to this book by any means.
There's not really a plot that ties together the disparate characters, just the tales of a group of young people as they navigate love and life. I also didn't feel there was a pace to the book to move it along.
I really enjoyed the narration.

Nice characters but thin on plot

This book with its clear and concise language is like being taken on a walking tour of Dalston and Bermondsey through the interwoven lives of friends who live there. As a local to the area it felt like I was listening to the chat of group of friends at the table opposite me in my favourite pub.

A walking tour of East London

there's just too much going on. it takes place over a weekend and there's about 7 characters that it goes between. I don't think I actually liked any of them because it goes between them so much.

the narrator was fine until the end. it's almost offensive to read someone's book and then pronounce their name incorrectly.

fine if you have spare credits

A thoughtful book with good characterisation, plot, historical reference. Though much of it is from the perspective of people in their 20s and 30 there is a beautiful depiction of a mother recalling her experience of being that age as she comes to terms with her immanent death. I remember that London’s heatwave like it was yesterday.

Lyrical and evocative

loved the story but the narration was great but then every now and then really poor, for example the male voices sounded like panto!
