‘An imperative how-to for creativity…I adore this book’ Nick Offerman

Adam Savage – star of Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters and one of the most beloved figures in science and tech – shares his golden rules of creativity, from finding inspiration to following through and successfully making your idea a reality.

Every Tool’s a Hammer is Adam Savage’s chronicle of his life as a maker. Through stories from forty-plus years of making and moulding, building and breaking, this book is a toolbox of problem solving, complete with a shop’s worth of notes on the tools, techniques and materials he uses most often.

This book will save you a few mistakes (and maybe fingers), as well as help turn your curiosities into creations. You will find everything you need to inspire you to build, make, invent, explore and – most of all – enjoy the thrills of being a creator.

Critic reviews

'Adam has drawn for us an imperative how-to for creativity that goes well beyond scissors, saws and glue, to include vulnerability, self-confidence and self-deprecating humour. I am aware of no human outside of fiction more qualified to pen this rousing paean to making. I adore this book' (Nick Offerman)
'Careful, close, often repetitive work lets the brain wander back and forth, from the micro-task literally at hand to the bigger problems, solutions, insights and emotions that we usually drown out with stimulus. Believe me when I say: when you’ve made as many Blade Runner blasters as Adam Savage has, you’ve learned a lot about yourself. Adam has stocked up a lot of deep thought and deeper wisdom: about how to make things large and small, decisions large and small, and how to make sure you’re making the things that matter. Consider this book as a 3D print out of Adam’s brain, and be glad you have it' (John Hodgman, Bestselling author of The Areas of My Expertise)
'This book is creative rocket fuel. Adam is a master maker, and this might be his greatest creation yet - a funny, vulnerable and soulful dive into the beautiful mind of passionate artist. It’s about making stuff, but there is also philosophy, insight, and, most of all, inspiration. This book is so cool!'
(Ed Helms)

Enjoyed even more than I expected

I identified with this more than I thought I would. Has some great tips, fun stories and an inspiring tone. It was over too quick and left me wanting more.

Great insight into a world class maker/designer

Adam has a great backstory, his positive attitude and passion for his craft is weaved throughout the book. Would highly recommend this to any budding creatives out there, whether taking your first steps or have years of experience under your belt - Adam is a relatable and enthusiastic designer that inspires and informs.

fascinating and easy listening

Adam is a great communicator over so many media. He speaks well and it's his honest truth, which covers over so apparently.

As good as I'd hoped!

As someone who would consider themselves a lifelong maker and a fan of so much of the work of Adam Savage, it would be very easy to have been disappointed in this as I had quite high expectations. This totally exceeded them. interesting, insightful and inspiring are a few words that come to mind whilst listening. Masterfully told with a passion readily familiar to other makers, yet with a calmness that only someone truly skilled in their artform and with a love of passing that knowledge on. Authorship is clearly another feather Adam can add to his cap, which must be running out of space to add them!

Inspiring

I've followed Adam Savage for many years and followed his advice and ideology in my own tiny workshop. This book is almost a bible of how to set up, run and utilise ideas and thought processes in your own creative way. It will certainly change, not only how I work on my own projects, but how I approach my own daily life too.

Fantastic!

It's a biography and so much more!

You can take it as just a biography or you can become consumed by it, then it becomes an insight to a new world of working and thinking or an instructional self-help book to become more productive.
The way Adam reads it just gives it a whole new dimension and personally I think reading it in your own head just wouldn't do it justice.
