About this listen

Eve’s Peace

Set in 1948, Eve’s Peace is a one-off novella that recalls Eve’s past, her struggles in the present, and her hopes for the future.

“I’m here,” I said, “because Cunningham wants me to find Kriminalrätin Gisela Winter. He’s working for a new department, very hush-hush.”

Guy frowned. “They want her for the war crimes trials?”

“That’s what he said, but I suspect his reasons run deeper than that.”

“Why do you say that?” Guy asked.

“Cunningham showed little interest in Gisela Winter when we returned from France; she wasn’t a high priority for him then. I reckon that something has cropped up in the past three years, something to attract Cunningham, and his new department’s, attention. Maybe that something is related to war crimes, or maybe it’s related to another aspect of Gisela’s life.”

“Where will you start?” Guy asked.

“Marseille,” I said.

“You’ll talk with Michel and members of the Resistance?”

“Yes.”

Guy hesitated. He looked troubled, perplexed. “Does Michel still want you back?”

“Yes,” I said

“How do you feel about that?”

I gazed at the wall in the trench. Only the foundations remained. Nevertheless, it was remarkable that this structure had survived for two thousand years. I wondered if our buildings would last as long

“Do you still love him?” Guy asked.

I switched my gaze to Guy and stared deep into his eyes. “You are the man I love,” I said.
