Summary
Alberich had spent most of his youth in the Karsite military schools training to be an officer. As the son of an impoverished mother, he had no other career choice open to him. And Alberich had risen in the ranks with almost unnatural speed. He developed expertise with many weapons and excelled in academic subjects with an ease that was the envy of his classmates. But in fact, the reclusive Alberich studied long and hard, pushing himself ruthlessly.
In battle, Alberich had always had a sort of "sixth sense" about things that were about to happen - when and from where the enemy would attack. Instinctively, he has this ability, for the Sunpriests kept careful watch for anyone exhibiting "demon powers" that were the hallmark of Karse's greatest enemy - the witch nation of Valdemar. Those they caught were "cleansed" in the fires of Vkandis Sunlord.
Both Alberich's skill and secret served him well in the army of Karse, and when Alberich became one of Karse's youngest captains, he received a special gift - a powerful white stallion "liberated" from the enemy. But this honor was merely a distraction, for the Sunpriests had laid a trap that even Alberich's strange foresight could not predict....

fantastic
loved it. I've got the actual book and have only read it once or twice but since listening to these books again by Mercedes lackey has brought my interest to the valdemar series back again.
I listen to the books when I'm out walking or have some downtime when carrying a book around isn't possible. I might even revisit some of my favourite valdemar books via audible or venture to the new ones.
either way I'm loving listening to the history of Alberich esp as it answers questions I had with my other books.

love the story, hate the narrator
I love Mercedes Lackeys books and have both read and listened to most of them that are available. This story is on par with her other works however I kind of hate the narrator. I dont know if it's because of coming straight from listening to excellent ones in the other series like Gabra Zackman and Nick Podehl but this guy is just not as good and has a way of pronouncing some words that just sets my teeth on edge. The great story carried the performance but I wouldn't go out of my way to try other books read by Paul Woodson

Disappointing narration
This is one of my favourite Valdemar books, giving the back story of how the Karsite Weaponsmaster became a Herald, but it was sadly spoiled by the weird pronunciation of Alberich, Karse and especially collegium - it is coll eej ium, not coll egg ium. Very disappointing.

Rather boring
Sorry, I like most of hers but this was struggle to finish. Too much description of characters feelings and thoughts and not enough action. I found Joust rather the same, in fact I gave up with that one! This is a bit better although I did fast forward through some of it.
