About this listen

It's late autumn in Edinburgh and late autumn in the career of Detective Inspector Rebus. As he tries to tie up some loose ends before retirement, a murder case intrudes. A dissident Russian poet has been found dead in what looks like a mugging gone wrong. By apparent coincidence a delegation of Russian businessmen is in town - and everyone is determined that the case should be closed quickly and clinically.

But the further they dig, the more Rebus and DS Siobhan Clarke become convinced that they are dealing with something more than a random attack - especially after a particularly nasty second killing. Meanwhile a brutal and premeditated assault on a local gangster sees Rebus in the frame. Has the inspector taken a step too far in tying up those loose ends? Only a few days shy of the end to his long, inglorious career, will Rebus even make it that far?

My mother used to tell me about John Rebus, I’d nod and say I’d get round to having a look at some point. A few weeks ago I had a freebie to pick so started on book one. I’ve lived alongside Rebus ever since, listening at every opportunity, even missing most of the Olympics, preferring to listen to this brilliant series, superbly read, instead. To start saying why, is to instantly be in danger of hyperbole. My favourite reads are the ones where to start reading or listening is to be instantly taken to another world, immersive and teeming with characters and life. Ian Rankin is a magician with words… you see, already I sound like a nerd who has lost the plot. Every book, so far has been a great book, this, is his best yet. With more to come in this series, I’ll stop now as I need to buy the next book now and get back to Edinburgh to find out what happens next to these characters I’ve grown to love.

Ian Rankin is undoubtedly amongst the greatest writers of our times and James Macpherson brings Rebus and his Edinburgh to life in a totally believable way. I have been a fan since Ian Rankin's first book 'Knots & Crosses' and can find no fault in any of the following 24 books. Well done Ian, 'Exit Music' is every bit as insightful and engaging as any other book in your wonderful Rebus series.

A good end to Rebus

The combination of wonderful story telling by the author and a superb reading style by MacPherson make it impossible to put my phone down. I love the irrepressible humour and intricacies of the plot. You just know that despite "retiring", Rebus is won't be gone for long.

Loved the story line focusing on the Russians. Only for them to be innocent of the murders.

In my opinion this is the best Rebus novel. Rankin nails the story and the voice acting is superb. James MacPherson owns the Rebus audiobooks and this is easily one if his best performances in a string of exemplary performances. This audio book is an example of when it all comes together. Brilliant stuff.

Very good book, I always enjoy the inspector Rebus books and am sad that he is retiring!
It was a good book but not excellant,
I found it very slow to begin with ,in fact I was a bit bored!
However luckily it improved in pace , and the story line improved with a typical very good ending!!
I am glad to see that he and Siobhan and old Mccaffertty will be back soon !
