About this listen
Five strangers drawn together at a roadside bar on the outskirts of Las Vegas. One rampaging monster, escaped from a secret facility, absorbing victims and accumulating biomass as it moves north from Arizona. The miles between them rapidly dwindling.
No, this is not the world’s best math problem, it’s Exponential. The rollicking, brutal, gory, and strangely poignant horror novel from Adam Cesare. Criminals and screw-ups need to face down science run amok in this literary tribute to films like Tremors and The Blob.
“Exponential is an excellent novel, one of the best creature features I’ve read in years...” (Horror After Dark)
“Adam Cesare’s mix of grim violence and old school horror movie references make for a great read.” (Rue Morgue)
"Exponential is fast-paced fun, a rollicking monster movie in 200 quick-moving pages." (Ain't It Cool)

The plot is engaging, but suffers a little from odd pacing, with major character introductions that felt a little too late in the story, and sub plots that lead nowhere.
It is, however, highly entertaining when it steps up a gear, and the final act grabs your attention all the way to the end.
The blurb compares it to Tremors, and I can understand why, as there are certain scenes that are set up similarly, but it feels more like a lower budget 80s B-movie. One of the ones where it might not be done perfectly, but you enjoy it all the same.
Enjoyable monster horror

Even though this is one of Adam’s earlier works, his skills as an author are already apparent – believable dialogue, rich but not overdone description, gripping suspense and exciting action. I really enjoyed the pop culture reference scattered throughout the book, and extra kudos for the Teen Wolf movie shout out! Most importantly, Adam does not disappoint with the horror aspects of the novel. There are some truly grisly and gory scenes, but they never seem excessive or gratuitous, and the book is always fun, fun, fun!
I want to single out Adam’s character work for particular praise as every single character in this book (and there are quite a lot) is sharply defined and three-dimensional. It is not hyperbole to compare this aspect of Adam’s writing to Stephen King, as both authors can create believable, fully-rounded characters in a couple of pages, or even a couple of paragraphs. It is just unfortunate that, in this book, none of my favourite characters made it to the end!
The narrator was a perfect fit for this audiobook. He kept me engaged throughout, and the character voices were not overdone yet were distinct and it was easy to understand who was speaking. The narrator was especially good at conveying the underlying and sometimes very sly and black humour of the book, without resorting to an exaggerated nudge and knowing wink to the listener. My one criticism is that the final showdown seemed a tad overlong, but I was nevertheless still swept along by the narration so this was minor point.
In conclusion, I whole-heartedly recommend this audiobook to fans of creature features and listeners seeking fun horror with bite. As noted above, this is one of Adam’s earlier stories, and I cannot wait to listen to his later works to see how he has developed as a writer.
Fun, fun, fun!
